Hyperthyroid treatment

by CK38, Oct 25, 2009 03:22AM
I recently was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism but was only able to see the Endochronologist once before we moved to another state. My symptoms include tachycardia of 120-140 when not treated by a beta blocker and tremors that sometimes get so bad I can not hold a pen. There are other standard symptoms but these are the two that affect my day to day life the most.

Now I am having difficulty finding an Endochronogist and my symptoms are mostly managed by my beta blocker and Zoloft but this will run out soon. My question is, can an Internist treat me as well as an Endochronologist? I'm afraid that will be my only choice in the small town we have moved to.

Thank you.

Call the internist's office and ask if they treat hyperthyroid.  Call the local hospital and ask there too.  Call ENT's, ear nose and throat Drs.
I started with an ENT.  He was able to order a bunch of tests.  My final diagnosis was by a process of elimination.  I was referred to an Endo who left the state 8 weeks after my RAI.
I have found an MD who will manage my care and I am very comfortable with him.

Here is a list of tests you can ask for.  Don't be afraid to take a list and ask for the tests.
TSH
FT4
FT3
TPOab- antibody test for Hashimoto's
TGab
TSI aka TRab- antobody test for Graves.
Thyroid ultrasound
Nuclear uptake and scan may be in order also.

Anti-thyroid medication was the only thing that made my hands stop shaking.  However, if you need the uptake scan, you can't be on these meds for a couple of weeks.
