Hyperthyroidism and dumping syndrome

Hi, yesterday I was told I have dumping syndrome ( even thou I never get diarrhea) but I get all the other symptoms. Today i found out I'm hyperthyroid (over active) - can hyperthyroidism cause dumping syndrome like symptoms?

Is that the only test that they based their diagnosis of hyperthyroidism on?

It's good that they're being thorough.  Are they testing for TPOab (thyroid peroxidase antibody, sometimes still referred to as "microsomal" on lab orders), TGab (thyroglobulin antibodies) and TSI (thyroid stimulating immunoglobulin)?

Thanks for the info. Saw the specialist yesterday, they are testing me for a whole load of autoimmune disorders, including celiac.

I am extremely scared :(

I do have it under control now.

Autoimmune thyroid disease usually does mean medication for life.  Hyperthyroidism can be treated with drugs, or it can be treated with radioactive iodine (RAI), which basically kills the thyroid, or surgery to remove it.  However, after RAI or surgery, you would be hypothyroid and have to take replacement hormones for the rest of your life.

However, many people have successful pregnancies both hyper and hypo.  You just have to monitor your levels very closely, especially early in pregnancy when the fetus' thyroid isn't developed yet and he's depending on your hormones.

Thank you for the suggestion, I will ask him tommorrow.

Sorry to hear of your problems, do you have it under control somewhat now? I am feeling stressed because I have not had children yet and im concerned that if i have some kind of autoimmune disorder then i will need to be medicated for life :(

Magnesium isn't a strong laxative.  It attracts water to your colon and has a mild laxative effect.  You should probably check with your doctor before taking it, though.  If you take mag for constipation, you want magnesium oxide.

I'm hypo thyroid...have Hashi's...so the only experience I've had with hyper is when I've been overmedicated.  One thing I know is that it's miserable, and I'll take hypo any day over feeling like your about to buzz off the planet.

Keep me updated...

I am taking Metamucil - i was told to avoid strong laxatives. I drink lots of water too.

No I don't but i will have them monday, he only told me over the phone. He did not diagnose graves disease as yet, have to see him in person first, I'll let you know what happens thanks so much!

Have you had a hyper thyroid?

That sounds very uncomfortable.  Have you tried taking magnesium for the constipation?

Do you have the results of the labs that led to your diagnosis of hyper?  If so, please post those with reference ranges.  Ranges vary lab to lab, so they have to come from your own lab report.  Did your doctor diagnose Graves' disease?

Is your doctor suggesting meds for your hyper?

Thank you for your reply, the odd thing is I have constipation, like I have the sudden urge to go to the toilet & all the horrible symptoms of dumping syndrome BUT no diarrhea. When something triggers my 'dumping' syndrome, I will be sweating, shaking, but when the urge comes il do something the size of a few quarters.

I am feeling extremely anxious, my throat hurts constantly, have trouble sleeping sometimes, eyes are dry & sore. I've lost weight too quickly but u have NO appetite at all to eat, when I do, I get stomach pain.

Yes, it can.  Hyperthyroidism causes food to be rushed through your gut faster than normal, which is why it can cause diarrhea and weight loss.

Do you have other hyper symptoms?
