Hyperthyroidism causing psychiatric nproblems?

by Athas, Oct 23, 2008 12:24AM
I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism more than 1/2 year ago, but viewed it something minor and forgot to see a docotor about it. The symptoms got worse, but for a long time I didn't really notice until a friend saw a photo of how thin I was and mentioned hyperthyroidism.
The past weeks have been hell. I do have a Borderline Personality Disorder, but did work a lot on myself and had made great progress so first I thought I was just in a crisis. I felt aggressive to the point that I was verbally lashing out at the people around me for no apparent reason or throwing myself against a wall until my shoulder was immobile,  I got irritated very easily, I cried easily and the emotional pain I felt about little things was so extreme I would often break down, crying and screaming for hours. Eventually, I also lost the ability to think rationally and did absolutely stupid things to the point at which I broke down at the main station and when they wanted to take me to hospital, five people had to holf me because I was kicking and screaming.
Even during the times when my Borderline Personality Disorder was really bad, I never experienced something like that over a greater length of time. I'm still working very hard to hide and to control it, but I know that if it was just the BPD, I would be coping.
Can hyperthyroidsim actually cause a patient to become kind of manic and lose their mind? My therapist told me it could even cause psychosis so I guess what I'm going through now are the effects of an over-active thyroid, but I don't know anyone suffering from that whose psychiatric problems were that bad.

It would not supprise me at all that your thyroid could have made u act out like that. Although of course you always have to take personal responsiblity for yor actions their are causes (medical reasoning)  that make people act certain ways. My best advice would be to see an endo. and try to manage these issues to a supression. Myself and others here im sure will tell you at one point or another they have to felt like they were going crazy dealing with symptoms or inadaquate treatment.

If you read some of my journals you will see how earlier this year I nearly ended up in a lovely white jacket with the extra long sleeves. The psychiatric triage nurse told me  he deals with more hyperthyroid patients than any other. Reason? GP's tend to think that a level is ok for going by the book but totally ignore the fact the anxiety state of the patient means that the dose is too high. Even my psychiatrist has learned from this episode and is now testing his patients for TSH etc. So it is indeed a very common problem and not one you should feel any guilt about. Lack of education for medical practicioners is amazing in this day and age!
