Hypo Hell - Please help

by appleeye, Jul 02, 2007 08:39PM
Did anyone experience severe constipation when going hypo?  My stomach is cramping, it hurts to sit on my butt, it really hurts to have a bowel movement, and when I do go to the bathroom my bowel movements are rock hard.  I went hypo waiting RAI (TSH 92) and now I am 3 weeks post RAI and have been on synthroid .125mg for 2 weeks and there still is no change.  When will this get better?

I even went to a GI but he will not do anything because I had a colonoscopy in Jan of 2006 and it was clear.

Constipation can be an issue. . . .

Also keep it mind that it takes synthroid at least 20 days to get into your system. . .then a number of months to get your body to the right dosage for you.  Once you get on the right level of medication, things should get better.  Hang in there.

Why did you have RAI? How much RAI did you get? Why?

I went constipated after RAI, but not to the extent you are describing.  I guess I didn't let it get that far by going on Metamucil for a few months. This corrected the situation and I don't need aids now, quit the opposite, however, its better  than being constipated in my book.

It might takes months or years for correction, so with your sever constipation I'd suggest some sort of aid.  There are Metamucil cookies.  I don't know if they work as good as the PD stuff,  but they are pretty good - not bad!

The longer you wait to correct this, the worse it might get, where you might end up in ER with  impacted bowls - thats not fun either!

Be nice to yourself and your mmmmm - take some type of aid for a while.

Good Luck!

They started my son on Miralax about a month ago for IBS w/ chronic constipation.  It has been amazing.  ABSOLUTELY nothing else worked for him.  He is on the prescription strength, but you can buy it OTC.  DO NOT add fiber to your diet for the constipation UNTIL you are cleared out!!!!  Made a huge mistake doing that to my son.  On x-ray it was backed up under his rib cage.  UGH!  Hope you get relief soon, I know there is nothing more miserable.  Have you also tried milk of magnesia.  Pretty amazing stuff those two.

I experienced some "constipation" for lack of a better word when I became full blown hypo. My bms weren't hard, but my muscle movement (peristalsis?) was incredibly slowed down. I would go days... felt bloated and uncomfortable. I tried "Activia" yogurt (Dannon), but what really seems to have turned the tide for me was an India(n) herb named "Triphala", and a couple of months on the Synthroid. I only take a third of what the bottle of Triphala recommends and it works for me (I'm about 118 lbs). You need to be careful and keep your doctor in the loop though, because all the meds (Synthroid, Levoxyl, etc.) say that increased fiber in your diet can reduce the med's effectiveness. Oh, and don't forget to drink plenty of water to help move things along! Good luck.
