Hypo and weight

by leealee, Jul 07, 2007 12:07AM
Has anyone ever went hypo and had no weight gain?  I had TT in April and after surgery lost 10 pounds.  Then waiting for RAI went hypo TSH 80 and only gained 6 pounds which does not even bring me back to what I was before surgery.  I am now on synthroid for 8 days and was just wondering if anyone else experienced NO or MINIMAL weight gain while hypo?  I know I am lucky not to have gained a lot of weight but I did not know if I should be worried.

I am hypothyroid and gained no weight and have even lost several pounds over the last year. The medical literature says that weight gain directly attributable to the thyroid is not the norm and that when it occurs it's water weight of no more than 10% of the normal body weight.

my guess is that many people are hypo and don't know it or have it treated because they haven't gained any weight. People look at me when I tell them I am hypo and day I don't look like a person with a thyroid problem. Weight gain seems to be the number one thing that sends people looking for a thyroid diagnosis.

My guess is that the fatgiue from the hypo makes people move around less and as they gain more they may even go into depression which won't help either.

I certainly wouldn't worry about it. Don't look for bad things in good things. Be happy :-D

I found out in may of 1996 I had hypothyroidism, i then two months later took a radioactive pill killing my goiter, I have since then gained 78 lbs not being able to keep off the weight have been the same weight for the past 12 years I am 203 lbs and very depressed i have 3 children the youngest is 9 years old.  I am very active and not a big eater but the weight does not seem to change, what can I do, my family is suggesting that I get the Lap Band but I am very confused i am ready to do anything for the sake of my kids. Any suggestions on what I can do.

Are you on thyroid meds.?   Please post your thyroid test results and reference ranges, so that members can have a look at your current status.

I haven 't gained much weight since diagnosed two years ago with Hypothyroidism, but the problem is I find it very difficult to even loose 5 pounds.  But I do have a question does anyone know of any side affects with having hypo and having a IUD Merena?

I have not gained any more than 5 pounds and have had hypothyroidism for years. I have hashimotos thyroiditis and the informations says weight gain is water retention. I think that is very true. My hormones are all over the place and I never know how my clothes will fit, but I never gain much weight. I attribute the water retention to hormone fluctuation- kind of like bloating before your period.
