And if he does go on thyroid meds his Cholesterol should drop again to with in normal limits if this is what the cause is..
It looks like your father could benefit from being on thyroid meds. However, in addition to TSH, his doctor should be checking free T3 and free T4, the actual thyroid hormones. TSH is a pituitary hormone, and as such, can be influenced by many factors besides thyroid hormone levels.
Hypothyroidism does cause cholesterol changes. Persuade your doctor to check FT3 and FT4 when he runs labs again in three weeks.
Just a warning from personal experience...glucosamine/chondroitin supplements can also cause cholesterol to go up.
Thank you for your help. The new diagnosis is actually for my father. He has a TSH of 6.68. His Dr. said he will do more blood studies in about 3 weeks. He increased his Lipitor dosage per day in the mean time.
Thanks again,
Gutty
Your cholesterol usually goes up with Hypothyroidism, this is quite common, also common in your age group to be dx with a thyroid problem....
