Hypothyroid

by Sharon0810, Jul 15, 2008 09:25AM
I have just been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, my level was just under 10.  One of my symptoms that told me to have this level checked was the bloating in my abdomen.  In the morning my pants fit but by the afternoon it hurts to button them.  I was already on a diet and exercise regimen which I lost weight in my legs but nothing in the stomach.  I have been on synthroid for 1 week, my endo doesn't think the bloating in my stomach has anything to do with the thyroid.  Is he right?  This bloating is really getting me down because no matter how much I exercise my stomach just keeps getting bigger.  Please someone give me some info on this
Thank you.

Did you ever learn anything else about this?  I've been dealing with horrible bloating for the last few months and don't know if it's part of the thyroid issue (just started meds two weeks ago) or if it's a separate issue.

Mine isn't so much starting the day as smaller and ending up bloated. I just have some bloated days and some of the bloated days are combined with flatulence that is very frequent. It's very uncomfortable. I'd like to know if you found out anything more about a connection.

Thanks!

As a result of having an issue with "night flutters", which I related to taking too much Synthroid, I decided on my own to drastically reduce my med.  After about 2 weeks, I started having the kind of symptoms you both described, along with severe acid reflux.  I visited Doc and was told to change my thyroid med. to a T4/T3 type, Armour thyroid, as well as double my dosage of Prilosec for two weeks to see if that settled everything down.  After one day of this regimen, all those symptoms went away.  Not sure which did it, but I'm going to stop the additional Prilosec in a few days and see what happens.  I suspect that the real cause was hypo t and the improvement was from the immediate effect of the T3 in  the Armour.

If this doesn't resolve itself as your med settles in I would let the dr know.  Also, have you had a recent pelvic exam?  You might want to think about pursuing that too

Well, after one day without the added Prilosec, all gastritis symptoms are still gone.  I can only conclude from this that getting the T3 from Armour thyroid has very quickly brought up my free T3 level and relieved my many hypo t symptoms.  FWIW  I also recommend that if it hasn't been done already, that you get the doc to test for free T3 and free T4, along with TSH.  Getting free T3 to the upper third of its range seems the best for hypo t and frequently a T4 only type med. such as Synthroid does not get you there.  Just something to keep in mind.
