Hypothyroidism and Omega 3

I have hypothyroidism. I was taking 125mcg Levothyroxine. When I had my TSH levels drawn it was 19 so the doc raised the med to 150mcg and I came back in 6weeks. TSH was 8.  He said to keep taking same new dose but skip Sundays because he feared I would have hyperthyroidsim.  Two months have past and during that time I began to take 2000mg Omega Fish oil to lower my 240 cholesterol. (I've been on Vytorin 10/20 for years).  Abnormal heart rhythm sent me to the emergency room. When cardiac was ruled out, the doc said my TSH was 20.  What happened? I did not skip any doses except on Sundays. Did the Omega 3 mess up my TSH levels.  Now it seems my meds are not even working. Help

Is your doctor basing you med dosage, solely on TSH?  Many of us have very low TSH and some have TSH that stays above range.  You should also be getting FT3 and FT4 tested to see what your actual thyroid hormone levels are.

Hello,

omega 3 should not mess up your thryoid levels.  However, you should always take any vitamins several hours apart from your thyroid meds.

Target TSH when medicated is usually in the range of 1.0 - 2.5.

With a TSH of 8 you were not at much risk for hyperthyroid yet.  It would appear that you may  need to increase your dose of thyroid meds to bring your levels back into range.  Please ask your doctor about this.

Hope this helps.  I am not a doctor.
