I just found out that I am Vitamin D deficient

by Justin1967, Aug 10, 2007 02:09AM
I'm just curious if it is related to my  thryoid surgery 2 months ago or do you think it is totally unrelated? Vitamin d is only 37 so I have been told to take Cholecalciferol 1.25mg 1 tablet per day..

I am totally speculating here.  How is your calcium?  I understand that the parathyroids regulate Vitamin D, but if they were damaged, your calcium would be off too... I would think.

Okay, I jsut found out I'm Vitamin D "insufficient" and have to start weekly supplements.  Not sure of the does... will find out when I go to pharmacy.

What does that mean?  My level is 27 and they want it from 30-100.  I drink LOTS of milk, but I stay out of the sun (obviously b/c of my history of melanoma).

Is JeniPeni out there?  Can someone tell me what this means and if it's serious?  All I can find is stuff about VitD defficiency in babies and kids... causing bowed legs... I'm not seeing much info for adults.  Is this a sign of damaged parathyroids for us?

I may be wrong, but I believe there are different types of vitamin D.

My Endo ordered a test for vitamin D-25. The results came back reading 32, which is too low. My Endo advised me to go to the drug store and get vitamin D-3, and take 1,000 IU a day.

I ended up with pills made to a strength of 400 IU, and the pharmacist directed me to take two pills one day, and three pills the next. He said it would average out and I would get the dosage my Endo desired.

Hope this helps. I also hope the parathyroid is not involved, because that would be another organ not working correctly, unless I just eat a diet that does not provide the proper nutrients.

I will be watching this thread in the hopes of learning more about this vitamin D stuff.

Looking closer at the bottle, it says it is Cholecalciferol.

In big letters it says Vitamin D-3.

It contains 200mg calcium (as calcium cafbonate),(20% daily value), and vitamin D (as cholecalciferol) 400 IU (100% daily value).

Thats another thing I forgot to ask my doctor, whether I have damaged parathyroids, yet my calcium level came back normal a couple of weeks ago.

It should read Colecalciferol not Cholecalciferol. I'm taking 1.25mg (50,000IU).I just hope I don't overdose on these things..

I rec'd my labs in the mail today.  Reference is 30-100 and I'm at 27.  It says 20-30 is "insufficient" and below 20 is deficient.  It does inded list Total Vitamin D, Vitamin D2 and Vitamin D3.  Can't remember which is which, but my total was 27 and D2 or D3 was 27 and the other one (either D2 or D3) was <4.  IT also says that therapy is indicated based on TOTAL vitamin D.

My calcium took a while to come back but it did finally come back and I had it tested 2 times in normal range so I'm HOPING this does not mean we have damaged parathyroids.  I am hoping mine is low b/c I avoid the sun so much.

I forgot to go pick up my Rx today so I will go tomorrow and let you know what it is.

Justin, did your RE indicate why he/she was even checking your Vitamin D?  My internist just said, "Let's just check your Vitamin D." after she asked me in depth about my melanoma and was I diligent about sunblock, etc.  WHen I said yes, I was very good about avoiding the sun, that's when she added it to my lab slip.

I'm not sure what you mean my RE?
I don't have an internist either just regular GP.

I have been seeing a holistic doctor and I told him that I had creaking joints. So I got a blood test done.

My vit D's low too.  First time it was tested, it was at 13 (range 25-85).  It's now up to 28 a month later.  The holistic MD has me on 2000 units of vit D daily, plus 15 minutes a day out in the sun without sunscreen (he even went as far as to write a prescription for the sunbathing.  LOL!).  Up until now, anytime I had to go outside, I was slathered in sunscreen from head to toe, usually spf 35 or higher.  This was largely due to the history of skin cancer in my family (trying to avoid being 4th generation).

Check your vitamin bottle and see if it also includes Vit A.  Apparently, Vit A will help to avoid possible toxic reactions to megadoses of Vit D.  The stuff I take has 1600 units of vit A for every 1000 units of vit D and is a fish oil-based formula.

This is a really good page on vit D - http://home.caregroup.org/clinical/altmed/interactions/Nutrients/Vitamin_D.htm

Thanks for your input and your experience.  I still don't know/understand how important Vitamin D is... I mean are there symptoms of defficiency?

I got my Rx yesterday and I'm taking one pill every week.  It's 50,000 units.  That seems like an awful lot, doesn't it?  I don't feel anything after taking my first mega-dose yesterday.  I suppose I need to research a little more to find out what the ramifications of low Vitamin D actually are.

I'm in the same boat.  My D number is 15.  My nutritionist said regardless of what the lab reads is normal, the very lowest you should be is 55.  I found the video below and posted it on this site a few weeks ago and people seemed to like it as much  as I did.  I'm on 50,000 IU every week for two months.  I am going into my second week and I have more energy and my depression is lifting.  It's like a miracle!  Good luck!

Low Vitamin D

I have low vitamin D.  I don't know the reading.  My endo put me on 50000 units for 4 days and then one a week for four weeks and then one a month.  I,also, have high TSH and have been on Synthroid for 25 years.  I felt awful.  Itching, pain in joints, heavy legs and arms, no energy and depression.  I have had the 4 vitamin D's a day and feel somewhat better.  My joints still ache in the morning and I itch in my back and neck.  (this may be unrelated).  Is there any correlation between all of this?  I am so tired of feeling bad and joints aching.   HELP

I should have sent my other comment to Dr Lupo.  Is there a relation between high TSH; deficient vitamin D and joints aching and stiff and, also, itching.
