My husband has a 2lb sledge I could borrow!  LOL  Be right up there.

Have you tried lavender?  Just the smell of lavender in a room, like in a plug-in air freshener by your bed, is suppose to help people sleep much better.  Know my sil uses it all the time.  I know, I know.  Why haven't I tried it for mine?  I'm allergic. =(~

Wish I could help you.  I'd send you some of my sleep time if I could have some of your awake time right now.  I can't seem to stay awake for anything.

Hope things are better tonight and you get some sleep.

Maybe it's the glow still keeping you awake. ;-)  Wife still having to sleep with blinders on?

Dac

PS--am really hoping "Homer" is a goiter.

I am now been experiencing insomnia for 18 months.  My GP insists that I need a Cpap machine.  I don't.  My mind refuses to shut down although I don't think about anthing and I'm not worried about anything.  If and when I do sleep I am still aware of everything around me.  I also had the most vivid and bizarre dreams that are on the verge of horror.
I tried Ambiem, went to a sleep sprecialist and followed any and all advice form drs. and books, magazines etc.   Nothing helped.   I still have lots of energy during the day but I also wake up with headaches.  Finally my endo put me on a low dose antidepressant. It helped.  He doubled the dose a month ago and I can get almost 6-8 hours of sleep.  Then the restless leg syndrome started.  It would also affect my arms.  I now take 40mg of folic acid twice a day.  It has stopped tha RLS.   I found out that Rls is caused by a chemical brain imbalance and the Folic Acid helps.  I also found out that Most Insomnia is triggered by a chemical brain imbalance.   I now sleep really well and don't relay on over the counter sleep aids.    I hope this has helped

Thank you, kate.
You didn't overstep.
You hit the bullseye.
In every sentence.

Except for the bedclothes, but we'll not get into that.
LOL!!

I hadn't really realized how much it was still eating at me.

Stella, I'd love to do that, but I haven't told you about Nanny. :)

Sorry Homer's still got you by a strangle hold.

Ar,

Years ago and this would happen again in 06 (different reason, though), I had a hard time sleeping. Many concerns were on my mind. I would finally fall asleep but while sleeping, I would wake a tad and hear my thoughts continuing to run through my mind!
It was MADDENING! This occurred during a very bad time in my life and nothing to do with health. Really, it didn't become right, until my life changed.
I know you've been through hell and you just recently had RAI. You've got a little way to go yet, I think.

During my insomniac days (which for me, turned into a few years-again, not due to health)-I would cut out coffee consumption before a certain hour. I would learn not to fight the insomnia and if I woke and couldn't get back to sleep, I would go out to the darkened living room (I would turn the lights on), put on my headphones and listen to music that spoke to my spirit and calmed me.
For me, that would be Enya, Clannad and Loreena McKennit.
When I began feeling tired again, I would go back to bed. Some days, it was so bad and I was so troubled...I prayed. I do not know if you believe in God but if you do, pray. One night, so beat up and full of concerns, unable to sleep (I hadn't been able to for awhile)-I prayed. I saw Him (however, not his face). He sat there and had his arms open. I saw myself, like a little kid and I climbed up into His (Jesus's) lap and he cradled me. It felt so perfect.
I felt so warm and so comforted. I slept like a baby that night. Indeed, He was with me that night. I think He always was but I just would not allow Him to help me.

You are a man. Do what you can/able to do during the day but know, you are doing what you are able to do. You can't expect to do more than you are able. This is the bottom line and by no means, a strike against you. So many people have been in this place and sadly, so many others will too. Cut yourself some slack.

I think in the future, this will change and you will be able to do more. Know that things will get better. I know this is hard to do, given your history but you finally have gone through RAI and only just recently. You need to know, that things WILL get better. It is never fast enough, to our liking but it's on the horizon.

I have other suggestions, for which I am about to say and may be quite funny to a man but never-the-less, just might help in some small way. A little help in many areas, might be a nice change... o.k. lol

Things to prepare you for sleep: take a nice hot shower/tub soak. Find soaps/shampoos that you really can appreciate (soothing scent),
if you don't have cozy bed clothing,  purchase the coziest, most comfortable sleeping attire you can find.
Bed/pillow needs be comfortable. Bedding and room temperature: not too hot, not too cold. And all cotton, high thread count sheeting is absolutely wonderful!
A glass of red wine (Merlot/Cab.) before bed isn't a bad idea, provided it doesn't lead to alcoholism (of course!).
If you read (book, magazine, online) or watch T.V. do not read/watch *anything* that taxes your mind or troubles you.

In this process, you need to prepare your mind/body for sleep. Perhaps a fluctuating TSH is a big part of the problem but I do think, your mind (being very upset) is contributing to it.
Certainly understandable! But you need to work on it. Again, I think it's important for you to know that you have done all that you can do, not expect yourself to do more than that and know, that things will get better. I think they will, AR.

In the meantime, you can try to do things, prior to sleep, that will make you more comfortable and setting up your body/mind for sleep.

While easier said that done, there is no sense in worrying/getting upset about anything come bedtime.
When that time comes, you need to do what you can that will lead you to a better nights sleep.

Tomorrow is a new day and any concerns you need to work out, is better left for the new day.

I hope I haven't overstepped myself. Wishing you well, AR!

~Kate

Oh you like my bracelet .. I will go back to see exactly what it is made of!

Sorry ChitChat, I guess the purse should have been a clue.
I didn't know they made a Mrs. potato head.
I knew yu was a gurl, though. :)
(Nice bracelet)

MJ13, sorry to here that you've been doing this for eight months. Two weeks is too long for me.

I was wondering about Ambien CR. I took Ambien the first week of trouble, and it did not help one bit. Don't think I want to be sleepwalking or buying stuff online in my sleep, though.

I can fall asleep fine, but I wake up two or three hours later and that is that. I even tried taking a second Ambien at two thirty, but never got back to sleep.

I can't nap anymore, either. I used to take one or two naps a day and still sleep all night. Now, well, you know.

My doctor is not going to give me sleeping pills anyway, unless it goes on and on. He doesn't want me on more drugs.

But it's making me sick, and I'm smoking too much. I need to get over this Hyper feeling, and that is going to take rest.
It's a vicious circle.

Think I'm going to go make me a tinfoil hat.

So how do you like the memory foam mattress??
LOL!!

Sorry to welcome you to the insomnia club.  I've had insomnia for over 8 months now.  I'm on my third type of sleeping pill.  Currently taking Ambien-CR.  I started out on Ambien and after 2 months, it did not help at all.  I was then put on Lunesta.  It worked for about six months, but I was feeling reeling groggy in the mornings.  Ambien-CR is working so-so.  I have trouble falling asleep even with taking Ambien-CR.  I've also done things in the middle of the night and not remembered doing them.  One was buying a memory foam mattress on E-bay.  I didn't remember buying it until I got an email saying I had won it.

I have two things causing my insomnia and neither one is going away any time soon.  First is my level of thryroid meds which is causing me to have alot of hyper symptoms.  Second, my TT and RAI put me in menopause at the age of 46.  This can cause insomnia also.

I'm about at the point where I've consider opening up a winery so I can get all the wine I want to drink.  My mind does the racing thing and my body feels like it's churning inside and I find it impossible to relax.  Maybe I'll check in to hypnotherapy.  At this point I'm getting pretting desperate for a sleeping solution.

You think I should change my icon?  You know there are jokes on the board about tinfoil hats at BBQ's where chicken is eaten as bizarre people made tinfoil hats and wore them at the campfire!  These same people are now on the thyroid board .... wonder if tinfoil hat to sleep may help at all?  LOL!!!!

Maybe a new icon later today .. ANY THOUGHTS OUT THERE? C'mon AR maybe you can pick it for me?

Not you, Stella. :)

Chitchat.

Potatoes that eat their own kind.
Very disturbing...

I could try some warm soy milk and honey. I've put soy on my "do not want" list, but it would be worth a try.

I wasn't too crazy about the wine idea, but my wife walked in with a glass in each hand so I thought what the heck. The effect was pronounced. I don't think drinking wine right now is such a good thing.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm  drinking - that may be the solution. course with all your meds ......I don't think so. It's got to be the Hyper AR. Try Grandma's recipe...  the hot milk and honey.

Choking out loud......

Mrs. Potatoe Head suggests counting baked potatotes instead of sheep and then posting some darn good recipes on how to make them for dinner, ok?

I've tried Ambien.
Had no effect.

Tried Benadrl.

C-Span...don't think I could handle that.

When I asked my GP he told me Melatonin. He said I was on enough meds right now. The Ambien didn't work anyway. :(

The melatonin isn't helping, although I used to take it and it did help then. But I didn't have insomnia, then.

I had a glass of wine and got five hours instead of three, so maybe I'll try drinking day and night. LOL!!

The problem seems to be when I wake up my mind races and I feel like I'm sucking on a 9 volt battery.

When I try to nap my mind won't shut up.
I think I'm too tired to sleep.
I'm worn out.

Violin music please... :)

No way I'm going to start reading tax forms! That would irritate my ulcers. LOL!!

Think happy thoughts. Think happy thoughts. Think happy thoughts. Do I have to rock back and forth?

I'm up again at that early hour of 3am. AR-10 - let your mind rest a little. I am sure it is difficult - just think happy thoughts. You have a million things in your mind right now. I wish you the best rest you can get.

lol @ watching CSPAN...I do the same thing! ;-D If I can't get to sleep (rare these days!) I take a Benadryl (same thing as Nytol but cheaper) about 30-60 minutes before I want to knod off...and tune in to C-Span. ;-) Careful though: "Washington Journal" can be quite amusing listening to the fitful callers. lol

My secret was always an Ambien, CSPAN, and some relaxation music.  If that didn't work I'd grab one of my old constitutional law books and that would do it every time.

You could always read the instructions for the 1040 form  (IRS.gov)!  Then again, that may just make you weep.   :-)

I know that this might sound silly but if I can't sleep I drink a cup of hot milk or milo then watch a bit of tv or listen to music (not in bed as this promotes non sleep) within 1/2 hour I am nodding off (old and safe remedy from the old days).  Would not use any sleeping tablets as the side effects and the habit forming nature of the beast makes more troubles than it fixes.

The only thing that helped me sleep was the combo of Ativan and Trazadone. Each by itself didn't work.
I feel for you! Can you ask doctor to add something to the anxietyt med you are on?

You know my story. I'll count sheep for you. A friend just told me he counts his heartbeats to fall asleep. His HR is very low.
