IBS and Thyroid( dont read if you are grossed out easily)

by venora, Apr 11, 2007 12:00AM
I had IBS with diarhea (diarrhea) and lots of pain.Got my thyroid out and the pain is gone.I still have a bit of trouble with loose stools
and mucus but the pain is gone.
So what is the thyroid connection with this? Was it hypo  all along making me that way?
It is so good to be pain free after suffering for so many years.
Hve any of you experienced this?I would love to hear from you.

hahaha it takes a lot to gross me out!
not sure if this will help you.... ive only known i have thryoid problems (hypo) for a year, but in that year ive gone from hypo to hyper and back again (due to too much synthroid), and my stomach went from really really constipated (hypo) to diarrhea (hyper - for like 9 months!) then constipation again (hypo - no meds but restarting them!)
so yeah i reckon thyroid will give you stomach problems. it seems to speed up everything in your body - including your digestion i guess! my mum has been taking synthroid/levoxyll (not sure what the difference is, we call it thyroxine here) for years and years and reckons the same thing.
if you are having problems with diarrhea maybe you could try reducing your dose by a tiny bit (my mum only needs to adjust hers by about 10mcg/day or even less!). do you have other hyper symptoms too, eg. palpitations, panic attacks etc?

sorry venora, i should have asked if it's chronic constipation or diarrhea - not sure how to tell the difference but!!! coz with chronic constipation i think you can get diarrhea... and since hypo causes constipation and hyper causes diarrhea if you did consider adjusting your dose you'd wanna figure out which one it is!!!

My GI hinted at the term IBS on some med. charts but never told me directly;  my sypmptoms are chronic constpiation from hypo ... will be interesting to see how things pan out with the higher Synthroid dosing of late.
