Hi, It depends on whether you're hypo or hyperHyper-sal. I'm guessing if you're having surgery, you'll be on the hypo end which means you'll need to replace the missing/reduced level of thyroid hormone in your body. You'll probably be prescribed Synthroid or Levoxyl. (same med, different brands) I'm newly diagnosed as hypo. and have limited experience. But, I will let you know that I has side effects on the GENERIC med: LevothyroxineLevothyroxine Levothyroxine sodium. I experienced nausea, headache and diarrhea on levothyroxineLevothyroxine Levothyroxine sodium - but only on the generic!! My MD attributed it the fillers in the generic. (Apparently, you can't be allergic to the actual thyroid hormone part of the med as it's a synthetic replica of the exact chemical/hormone that already exists in your body.) I had to switch to the BRAND drug, Synthroid. If you read others posts here, you'll see that different people like different brands of thyroid hormone, some even like the generic (that made me feel sick). Everyone is different. For some people there also seems to be some an adjustment phase to the med. I was one of those (unfortunately). Good Luck!
I'm not taking any drugs (eurthyroid) so I guess I will find out after surgery if I have to take anything. I've heard I might have to take Thyroxine tablets?
Thyroxine is the (synthetic) thyroid hormone. It's taken when your thyroid doesn't produce enough hormone. If your MD mentioned thyroxine, then he/she must think you'll be hypo after your surgery. The brand names of the med are synthroid, levoxyl, etc. Your MD should explain ALL of this to you BEFORE surgery!!! Including the reason why you're having the surgery, and the effect the surgery will have on your thyroid. Please make sure he/she explains everything to you!
