I'm confused

by Dufeal, May 07, 2009 09:25PM
One year ago I received RAI for hyperthyroidism. My blood works two weeks ago are: TSH 0.0, Free T4 0.9
My Dr. said the results are fine. However, I feel just as I did when when first diagnosed with hyperthyroidism - Anxiety, insomnia, nervousness, dizziness and occasional palpitations. My menstrual period is normal and my BP around 110/ 75. My Dr. said I have Generalised Anxiety Disorder and ordered Prozac, which I refuse to use. I have good days and very bad days. What am I to do?

A bit confusing...your TSH indicates that you are hyper, which is almost impossible if you had successful RAI and are on no meds.  However, your FT4 is in the lower end of the range (0.6-2.0).  Check the range against your lab report...different labs use different ranges.  FT4 indicates that you are low normal, maybe even bordering hypo.  Your symptoms look hyper.  I'd really like to see FT3.  Is it possible RAI was not completely successful?

Couple more thoughts...have you ever gone hypo since the RAI?  Have you ever been on meds for hypo?

TSH 0.0 Normal range 0.3-6.2
Free T4  0.9  Normal range 0.8-2.0
Never went hypo after RAI. In fact went hyper and placed on carbimazole for a while, now on no meds and I'm definitely not using that Prozac.

My only guess, and RAI and hyper are not my specialties, is that the RAI did not zap (a technical term, I know!) your thyroid completely.  You should have gone hypo shortly after the RAI.  Have your doctors commented on this at all?  You know yourself best, and if you feel the same as you did when you were hyper, you have to trust your instincts.  I don't care if your doctor says your results are fine.  If you don't feel fine, then they're not.  Can you have the FT4 and TSH reapeated at the same time you have FT3 done?  FT3 is really the most important piece of the puzzle.  It could be that your symptoms indicate hypo, as many symptoms "cross over" between hypo and hyper.  It's a tough one to call.  I'd definitely get the FT3.

Ask for another RAI uptake scan.
Your thyroid is still struggling to function and struggling quite well by the sounds of it.
It doesnt look like RAI has done the job but I cant figure out why this wasnt picked up in earlier blood tests.
Have you got your last 3 sets of labs available?
It may be something else thats causing the Tsh to show Hyper.
Just a thought.
