Increase Synthroid?

by Craniac3, Jun 18, 2007 11:38AM
My TSH was 130 and my cholesterol 289. After 6 weeks on 75 mcg of Synthroid, my TSH is 4.75 and my cholesterol is 177. TSH fits old "normal" range, but not 2003 AACE updated range of .3-3. My old labs from 10-20 years ago show my TSH between 2 and 3. My question is, will TSH continue to improve on this dosage, or should I be looking for my doctor to up my dosage a bit? I do feel better, but still not completely normal.

My second question: will my bowel movements return to normal on the correct dosage, or do I have to live with this bloat forever?

They usually increase it after 6 wks if levels aren't right.  My endo would consider your TSH, as she likes it around 1.0.  You need to talk to your dr about this especially if you're still not feeling right.  When you're levels return to  normal so will your bowels.  YEAH!  This was one of the best benefits for me, too. ;)

The normal course of  hypothyroidism, is that the thyroid gland will slowly die off until it has no function left. This can take years, 10,20, 30 plus years and its not the same timeline for everyone, which depends on your system and how sever your hypothyrodism.  Until then you might expect doses to change periodically. Or stay at a certain dose for years.

If current dosage does not change within 6 to 12 weeks, then doctor may keep you at that dose.  Doctor could fine tune levels by tweaking med. dose. However science has proven that tweaking doesn't improve symptoms. I find tuned mine and over shot levels, thereby taking me 8 years to get back on track and still don't know if I am there yet.

I don't know what type of BMs you are referring to, but aids taken daily for a while, usually helps and correct the situation.  Sometimes our system has to be retrained to do what's is suppose to do normally.

The bloat might not be from hypothyroidism. Glucose intolerance for one - Celica. Or other heath conditions can cause bloating as well.

I have bloat from intolerance to some foods, medication, vitamins/minerals.
I have learned to stay away from them.

Good Luck!
