Increasing dosage on own, safe?

by Eden218, Apr 27, 2007 12:00AM
I currently take 75mcg of Levothyroxin (levothyroxine) and I would like to increase my dosage by just taking one and a HALF pills instead of one per day but without my doctors consult, if I did this for say 2 weeks and saw an improvement in my sleepiness and weight that was healthy and normal to what I am used to can I insist that I be put on that particular dosage.

My thyroid is tested every year and doesn't change, I don't know what the numbers are but my doctor says they are normal. I did go on antidepressants last fall thinking that was my cause for the way I was feeling, lethargic, weight gain etc... and it did nothing but make me gain more weight and want to sleep even more, I no longer take them and but from reading some of the comments today, which is my first time to this forum, it could very well mean I need to have my dosage increased especially since I am working out it seems that some of the comments lean towards that you need to increase dosage in some cases. I have been on this particular dosage for about 4 years now I am 35 years old and I exercise regularly, 5-6 days a week alternating weights and cardio and my diet doesn't go over 1200-1400 cal a day, healthy food, no take out etc..and my weight has not moved AT ALL. I have adjusted my caloric intake to see if that helps along with switching up types of exercise to "trick" the body as the say in the health magazines, to burn fat.

Please advise if I can, safely, on my own, for about 2 weeks take a pill and a half and then go to the doctor and have my thyroid tested again to see where it's at and possible increase to the dose that I want to take.
Thanks

NEVER, EVER adjust your thryroid med on your own.  If you have too much in your system all kinds of things can happen...like higher bp and heart rate and insomnia.  Advise you to talk with your dr before making any changes!!!!!

not a good idea. One and a half pills would be 112 mcgs and that's too big of a jump even if your thyroid was a little low and it's not. Ask your doc what your tsh is and if it is in the higher range like over 3 than ask too raise your dose a tiny bit to bring down to 1 or 2.

Was overdosed last year by a pa, (had me on 250) I only weigh 130 lbs, nearly killed me. I agree NEVER  EVER  adjust your own dose, and make sure your doc has clear understanding of the labs he's run. Mine admitted after the mess he got me in that he didn't really understand thyroid that much!!! I asked for a referral right away.

In addition to all the above (NOT SAFE) 2 weeks isn't enough time to clearly see any changes in TSH .. it takes a solid 6 weeks for full benefit .. my endo tests me ev. 4 weeks.  If you talk to your Endo I am sure he/she will give you a trial higher BUT not that high a jump ... they go in 12.5 to 25mcgs increments based on the #'s and how you feel but unless really out of normal range Hypo I don't thing they would jump that high that fast ???

Cheryl (thy ca 1/07    synthroid 88 TSH is 1.8 .. goal is .5-1.0 to supress other side)
