Insomnia after having my thyroid removed

I had my thyroid removed on 10/2 due to cancer and I was started on levothyroxine right away.  For three nights now, I havent been able to sleep.  Its 1:45 am right now and Im wide awake. The last two nights Ive been up until past 2 and made myself go to bed where I laid there for awhile then finally fell asleep.  I sleep until about 6, then Im wide awake again.  I teach high school, and Im off this week because of my surgery, but I go back next week which means getting up at 5.  There is no way Im going to be able to make it on 3 hours of sleep a day.  Did anyone else experience this after having your thyroid removed?  What fixed it? Is this something different going on?  I dont do well when I take sleeping pills, so Im trying to avoid that if possible.  I really need to not be in a dead sleep either like the pills put me in.  I have a 11 year old daughter with type 1 diabetes and I need to help her in the night if she needs it.

Everybody is different.  Since my TT I have found that when I am in a hyper state I get insomnia.  When it flips over to hypo all I want to do is sleep.  I was started out on too much synthroid initially.  I would sleep for 1 1/2 hrs, wake up for a while and then go back to sleep. 1 1/2 hrs later I was up again.   That went on all night for about 6 weeks until my levels started to normalize.  Slept very well for about 3 weeks but, because my Dr was still playing with my meds, I went into hypo mode and couldn't stay awake past 7:00 PM.  Then I'd sleep all nite.   What I'm finding now, 4 months later, is that the closer I get to "normal" levels the better I'm sleeping.   I think it just comes with time.  What helped me was a very understanding boss who let me come in late or leave early if I was really wiped.

Sounds like your thyroid med is too high and needs adjusting. Call your endo & tell them whats going on. They'll have your labs drawn to see where your at. Everyones metabolism varies so what works for one may not work for another. Hope you feels better soon, I've been there and it's miserable....cjs

Its the lack of thyroid hormones in yr body now that yr thyroid is gone and you are probably Hypo.
I havent slept much myself the last few nights as my TSH decided to walk up to over 7.0.
Are you on thyroid replacement yet?
