Before I had my thyroid removed, I did a lot of research on iodine (a natural doc recommended I take it). As Barb said, it is not usually a good idea for autoimmune diseases as its like throwing gasoline on fire. With that being said, many peer-reviewed studies show great success with iodine use, but ONLY when it is used in conjunction with selenium. This can actually shrink a goiter. The problem is, its very hard to regulate, and most often you can do your body more harm than good. Too much can flare up your disease, send you hyper, raise tsh levels, or even cause your thyroid to grown and get hard. The same can happen with too little. The iodine patch testing on the skin is not accurate and your should have actual iodine testing at a lab. This way you can know for sure if you are deficient. Good luck.
hurray - finally found your post. i've posted answers to your question in several locations today.
my TSH is 93; i think the T3 one was 3.0 -- i accidentally left both copies with my naturopath. will get one back next week.
i don't trust the lab that did the blood test so i'm going to ask my naturopath to re-test me next week, instead of waiting until the end of november, like the endocrinologist wants me to do.
i wrote to optimox -- the company that manufactures iodoral and they wrote back that it wasn't the iodoral that caused the high TSH but bromine [or whatever it's called] -- i am still recovering from a VERY allergic reaction to eating bread dipped in beef broth; and i had had the TSH test less than a week after being quite ill from the effects of eating that bread.
anyway, optimox is sending me something, free of charge, to take to de-tox from the bromine - supposedly it takes a month to de-tox.
for anyone -- i highly recommend mary shomon's writings -- please visit her blog on about.com and also dr david brownstein. i have also ordered his book.
What do you mean your TSH was in the ozone layer? Please post your latest thyroid test results.
Iodine supplementation is not recommended for those with autoimmune thyroid disease. It can actually make the disease worse.
Rachelfreedom - if you still visit this site, if you have thyroid cancer, you will have to have your thyroid removed, if you haven't already, in order to get rid of the cancer. Iodine will not cure cancer.
hello rachel. hope you and others will keep posting here.
i just had to get off of iodoral after being on it for 6 months. my TSH was in the ozone layer so i've been de-toxing or it -- 5 days now. as soon as my body will let me, i'm going back on it.
I have Papillary thyroid cancer and I dont want to lose my organ and be on synthroid for life. I just ordered Iodoral and I am hoping it will help me. Does anyone know anything about Iodoral and thryoid cancer?
thanks
I have done the iodine skin test by painting a 2 x 2 square of iodine on my forearm. I would do it before going to bed and by the morning there is nothing there. Does this indicate an iodine deficiency?
It will help you if you have an iodine deficiency. Did you do the skin test to see how deficient you are? Be very careful with it if you have a lot of thyroid issues going on and you really aren't deficient.
