Is it OK to supplement Zinc or not for hypo?

Some others told me zinc is a stimulant for hypothyroidism and some
said it could lower the cortisol level. So they said it is not
recommended to supplement it. Following is my blood zinc test report.

Zinc 79.35 (76.50-150.0)

What do you think? It really told me I am Zinc deficient ,right?

Thanks.

PCP= Primary Care Practioner....my Doc who I have had for over 20 years.
I am lucky as his Mother has Graves and had RAI so he is open to all suggestions and we work great together as a team.
But at the start, he was very biased on internet stuff I researched.
Now we work great together.
I see no reason why not to take Vitamins B , C & iron as they are expelled from the body if not needed.
And yep, I had the full blood tests done on all deficienices with a normal Lab Test although the Selenium one took a few days to come back as it had to go to Sydney.

All the best Fragrance :)

Smiler,

I think you are very lucky to live in Australia, lol. Do you mean I should have all vitamins and minerals tested to find out which ones are deficient? you had them tested with your doctor's prescription? Wow, that is so great!  For many doctors, they just care about the thyroid readings, not the nutrional facts...

I am now just taking the iron supplement as I have ferritin tested, which was only 34 firstly. And I take the water-soluble vitamins, such as Complex B and Vitamin C, too. Because I think it is no so dangerous to take them even if they exceed what I need.

BTW, What is PCP?

P.S
Forgot to add .....

I always read prior to RAI and after RAI that Selenium was good to take for thyroid problems.
I had my Selenium checked and it was near the top of the reference range so what may be good for one person, may not be for another.
Thats why I stipulate to get your bloods done for ALL vitamin deficiences like I did.
Then take it from there with your PCP.

I have a long history of being super drug sensitive (even of vitamins) so that is why I am on a multivitamin. (Sorry Stella...I meant Rachael).
I just believe that rather than running out and buying vitamins and supplements you may NOT need, to get blood tested first for the deficiencies.
I know for some that is impossible because of the cost in USA but here in Australia, we do not pay for blood tests, regardless of which ones are done.
Zinc can be toxic like many other vitamins so caution is to used when taking large amounts.

Beleive it or, I am allergic to coconut oil so any vitamin what has that in ...I cannot take.
I cant even use coconut suntan oil or moisturizers...weird hey?

I haven't gone back to be tested. I went on a doctors thought I needed Zinc and started it.

Just so you know - my tablet is a 30mg once a day - not a 60mg

Hi, Stella,

How often do you have Zinc level tested after supplementation?

Thanks.

Hi, smiler, thanks.

I suspect I am deficient on Vit D and Calcium, but how were you diagnosed as Calcium Deficiency (By Serum Calcium or BMC scanning?)

For Centrum, yes, it is good, but you know, it contains iodine, which could be not suitable for Hashimoto's hypo, don't know about the hyp after RAI. And it offers the 100% RDA of Vits and Minerals, which are considered too small dose for many people.

I take a zinc supplement only and no multi's.

Mine is a Solgar formula and it is 60mg a tablet.

Going on Zinc made my tongue issues much better. My tongue was extremely painful - deep cracks that looked like they were going to bleed soon and greysih white with a sick film on it that resembled cotton or frosting. I had a divit in my tongue close to the front like  a deep dimple and it was growing and painful. I was tested for thrush - glucose interol- and everything else that was chalked up to acid reflex.

As I said the words from that doctor years ago to start zinc kept going through my head and I just started it as she instructed.

Those issues are all gone and I do think the zinc improved that and also help build my immune system back up to be able to fight most viruses and colds I was getting quite often.

I was Hypo from RAI and as my levels came up and became stable, my zinc corrected itself.
I too like Stella was on a multivitamin with zinc in it but wouldnt take zinc on its own.
My Doctor recommended "Centrum" to me.

All vitamins should be passed by your Doctor first and if he/she thinks it is necassary, they will tell you to take them and the dosage.

In the multivitamins Centrum, there is a minut dose of 5mg in it. I was taking one capsule a day.
I was on Vitamin D/Calcium combination for 4 weeks and a Mega B Vitamin (which I am still on) as I was deficient in D/Calcium and B12  vitamins.
I am on Eutroxig (thyroxin sodium) and have been since 5 weeks after RAI which was June 2008.
My original diagnosis was Hyper with Graves.
Hope that answers your question.

Stella, and Rachel,

Do you re-check your Zinc level after supplement? How do you feel with it?

Thanks all of you.:)

Hi, smiler, did your Zinc level fix itself after treatment of hypo? If not corrected with hypo, then how? Mine was tested after months of hormone treatment.

I did start taking zinc to boost my immune system. I take 60mg in the morning.

Since taking zinc I notice my tongue finally getting back in shape and pink again.  I feel for me it was a good choice to start it.  I never had a test but a doctor I had years ago suggested it - I fell away from her due to following a PA in her office that left the building and went elsewhere. He was more in charge than her on treating me for Graves/RAI/hypothyroidism. That was a big mistake on my part.

When I got so deathly ill from hypothyroidism and moved from doctor to doctor to help me  - I kept hearing her words to get on zinc. Ignorance kept me away from her - but since then I have communicated with the office and feel she was right all along.

Be very careful with Zinc as it can also be toxic if not needed.
My Zinc level was like yours but mine came up on its own and fixed itself.
Ask your Doctor whether you should be taking Zinc and if so, what dosage.
