Just Wondering!! has any one experienced hearing loss or pressure in ears

by Tammy67, Jul 11, 2007 11:31PM
This may sound silly but I've noticed a long with all my other symptoms I don't hear as well as I did, and I feel like there is pressure under my ears, I wanted to know if anyone else felt this way or if its totally unrelated

I take antithyroid med for hyperthyroidism. I have constant ringing, and one time when I missed a dose I lost my hearing for a few seconds. But I have very good hearing and a heightened sense of smell compared to my husband.

Think it might be Hashi with large goiter and nodules one being very large) not sure, seeing endo for first time today,
I will let you know later what he says
I just wasn't sure if my hearing loss and pressure is a symptom I should tell him about or if its getting older (39) but since you both notice something with hearing I'm going to tell him today
Thanks for your help
I'll post later
Thanks Tammy

I had problems with my ears as well...doc said she wasn't sure if it has worsened because of my thyroid problems or because of my environment.

Let us know how it goes.

I believe hearing losss is a symptom of hypothyroidism. It is listed in the brochure form the American thyroid Society.

I had neck pain, slight pain when swallowing -- started about 10 weeks ago..
Had sonogram -- good size nodule
Had Biopsy - it was normal

4 weeks after that biopsy being normal...  I have to take advil every 6 to 8 hours to releive the pressure in my ears.

If I do not take it, the pressure in and under my ears gets unbearable and my neck and throat hurt and swallowing begins to really become an issue --

Then I give in and take the advil....  45 mins to an hour later... I have relieve but the dull pressure in my ear still exists.

I've just about had enough and am going to book an appt with an ENT in the morning...

These symptoms are different and in addition to the issues I had prior to biopsy...

oh yeah -- forgot to tell you...
my blood work was normal and I do not take any medication other than the advil...

Yes- I've had some of the ear sx too: ear ringing/ pain under ears (more in neck area), pulsating sounds that coincide with my heartbeat that muffle the outside sounds. I've also had eye sx as well-- eye pain, decreased visual acuity at times. What did your doc have to say at your appt on the 12th?

He basically told me I'm nuts!!  (look back on posting after app't on 12th) and you'll understand what I mean, and I didn't even mention the hearing problem and pressure yet,  Its funny that a couple of you have mentioned visual symptoms also because I had my eyes tested ( I wear contacts) about the middle of June was given an new prescription had it filled and picked it up about a week later, tried wearing my new prescript, for a week  My vision was awful, I called Optometrist told her and she had me come in, did my eye test over, she couldn't get the same reading from my test, retested still had problem, she told me she was having a hard time getting a good reading, ecspecially from my left eye  (coincidentally thats were 2 large nodules are).  my neck is sore too! and lately I've been having pain in the middle of my chest just couple inches below my collarbone,
and on the side and under my left breast, part of me wants to go get checked the other part just thinks they will have a straight jacket waiting for me,  I'm sooooo tired of all this!!!!
But enough about me How's everyone else doing???

For what it's worth, I began to experience all sorts of health problems around the time I was diagnosed with Hashi/Hypo, including ringing in ears (I now have to sleep w/ the TV on the to drown the ringing in my ears), Reflux/GERD (bad heartburn for no apparent reason), started wearing reading glasses for the first time in my life, my eyes often feel irritated and very sensitive to light, one eye lid twitches for no reason, carpal tunnel in both wrists, tingling feet, racing heart with palpitations especially when I'm in bed or laying down. MD thinks it's all due to hashi/hypo and wants to wait until tsh is lower (in normal range) before I;m sent to neurologist, cardiologist, etc. This disease/condition can do all sorts of strange things to your body. Good luck!

I feel for you and def would see an ENT  maybe they can do something for you  Its possible that either your goiter or nodule is bigger than they think, I've heard story's about people being twice the size they thought it was.  As for me have not even had biopsy yet getting nervous!!!
hope you feel better soon!!

Thanks for posting!! It's strangely comforting to know others have the same hashi/hypo symptoms. I wondered if you took any neuro tests for the tingling?? My MD says if tingling persists after my tsh is down, he'll send me for neuro exam. (I'm getting sick of MDs) Besides the Endo, so far I've seen are ENT for ringing in ears, (every test came back normal, no reason for ringling). And Gastro for reflux, I'm now taking prevacid (which helps!). I've seen a few other posters here who mention tingling as a symptom, so maybe it is due to hypo. Hope you're better soon too!

I have the plugged ears/trouble hearing on&off.  I have my biopsy next Monday, and I'll be sure to ask the doc what he thinks and let you know.

Your right  it is kinda strange and comforting at the same time
I had my family Doc send me to a Neurologist first I had a CT scan (showed brain cyst but thats all) and he did blood work all normal including B12 which apparently can cause tingling hands and feet, He did a Cartoroid Ultrasound to check arteries in neck for blockages that's ok, (during Cartoroid Ultrasound is when they saw thyroid and proceeded to do a thyroid Ultrasound ) and he sent me for an   e.e.g. had that done last week don't know any results but no one called so I'm assuming its ok!  In his office after examining me he said he didn't think anything was wrong with me but he was sending me for the three tests I wrote above ( I seriously was thinking either MS or Early Alzheimer, I have both in my family) mind you I don't go back to see him till September but now that I know I have a problem with Thyroid and a better understanding of how it can make you feel, I'm not as worried about MS or Alzheimer
I think I'm going to ask for MRI still just to be sure,  probaly wouldn't hurt to see a Neurologist yourself,   Take Care

I have the same symptoms you talk about...I also had a bad drop in BP.  92/68 right before they decided to do TT.  Had ringing in my ears then on top of the pressure/plug up.

Hi SuzieQTT,  I hope you're feeling better or at least an improvement in your symptoms. Did theTT help any of your symptoms? If I may ask, why the TT? I have hashi/hypo. MD is treating me w/ synthroid. I was diagnosed in early April, so far not much improvement. I can ignore the ringing in ears during the day, but at night I need TV on to block it out so I can fall asleep! I don't have pressure/plug up...yet. My BP is normal. I have tingling feet, heart racing & palps when I lay down, some eye problems (which are the least of my health concerns). I've also had much more headaches (migraine-like) than I normally get, and I have carpal tunnel. I'm 40, female, was in good health until hash/hypo took over. Are you doing any better? Good luck.
