Just wanted to update from last week

by RhondaK, May 09, 2007 12:00AM
I had posted last week on how I was newly diagnosed and was taking levothyroxine and felt just horrible.  Couldn't figure out what the deal was.  Well I'm happy to report my oldest daughter had a big basketball tournament this past weekend I almost worried myself sick on how I was going to manage it with being so exhausted.  Well I woke up Sat morning and just felt great.  It continued all weekend even with little sleep.  I have gotten back on my treadmill this week, which I couldn't even manage last week.  I am feeling much better, headaches gone and my plantars faciaitis I was dealing with seems better.  Can't imagine how but it is.  Wonder if it could somehow be related to the hypo.  I have no idea how long I've been hypo because I do  not go to dr regularly.  But for the past year prob I have had twitching in my right top eyelid.  Drives me CRAZY!!  I kind of wonder now if it's related to the hypo because it seems to be lessening some.  The main problem I'm having this week is constipation.  Started stool softeners yesterday so we will see if it helps. But all in all I'm feeling much better.  Thanks for your comments, they really helped me.

Thrilled to hear you're feeling better!!! Glad you put the word out there that the med does work, especially for those of us (like you) who had to go through and adjustment phase! -- I've heard constipation can be a symptom of hypo, so stay in touch w/ your MD and get your TSH checked in a few weeks.

Yes I called my dr about the side effects and the constipation.  She said the side effects were hopefully just my body adjusting and the constipation from the hypo.  Told me to start the stool softeners.  I go back July 5th when I go back for my mammogram to be rechecked.  I am VERY relieved I only felt yucky for about a week.  I was dreading feeling that way for 2 months.  Don't think I could have tolerated that.

For what it's worth, I found that Metamucil capsule twice a day can help constipation. Just be sure you take it a few hours (like 3 or 4 hours) before or after the thyroid med because the fiber can affect/reduce the absorption of the thyroxine. And, drink lots of water.

It's worth alot to me believe me.  I will look for the metamucil tonight. I have to go to walmart to buy desserts for a sports banquet tomrrow night.  I am way too busy to be as incapacitated as I was last week.

The metamucil capsules are easier to take than the powder than you mix into a liquid and then have to drink a full glass of (yuck). You can also take a stool softener with it, if need be. Wish I didn't know this. But, it does work.

Miralax just went over the counter .. I've been on it for 2yrs and since realizing I've been hypo those 2 yrs I now only need 1/2 the dosage!!!!!  The other half, well ... maybe hormonally induced as I am 48!

It is very safe .. so safe it is given to children with GI problems (not sure if FDA approved but many are on it with severe constipation issues, etc.) and no side effects and non-habit forming and my GI has told me 20 times over very safe and now best of all O-T-C~~ So if other remedies don't work I'd run to buy it at the store vs. needing to see a Dr. for a script for it!

It does take 2-4 days to work and then you take it and adjust it according to "your needs".
