KITCURIOUS or maybe somebody else knows what branded generic means?

by SVETA, Aug 16, 2007 07:40AM

What did you mean saying( in one of your posts) that Levoxyl-is branded generic. My doctor just switched me from Shyntroid to Levoxyl and she said --it is just different brand name. Could you explain please what is the difference between brand name and branded generic? Thank you very much. Sveta.

They are the same hormone in both.  The synthroid is just the original brand name so it costs more.

How is the pain in your legs doing?  Hope it is much better.

Thanks for asking . I'm still in pain. Don't know what to do. I also have saliva gland problems after RAI, jaw pain and long lasting sore in my mouse. So next week I have an appoit. with oral surgeon.
Right now i feel really lost. Thank you so much for asking and for your support.Love, Sveta

PS I still did not get it. Levoxyl is the brand name or generic? Thanks again.

They are all levothyroxine sodium. Synthroid was the original big brand name. Eventually the patent on a drug is lost and other companies manufacture it. Sometimes the company itself will manufacture a generic version of their own drug.

The other brand names came after, are cheaper and considered branded generics.

There are also generics that are not brands.

Graves Lady made a list of all the names of the  branded thyroid meds in a recent post.

The unbranded ones just say  "levothyroxine sodium" on the label, no brand name like Levoxyl or Unithroid.

Unbranded is levo, but it can be a little different from lab to lab and you get whatever the pharmacy has access to at the time you fill your rx. The theory is that a little different, when it comes to thyroid replacement, can be meaningful.

You are on a brand, Levoxyl, that is coming from the same source (Jones Pharma, part of King Pharmaceuticals) every time. A Levoxyl tablet is shaped like a thyroid so it's easy to identify.

In addition to reading the label, I open every bottle to check the shape and color of the tablet, Levoxyl, like Synthroid, has different colors for each strength,  before I leave the pharmacy. Two out of three times I have had to get it changed for the brand name, from the unbranded generic they handed me.

Halfway OT- One interesting thing I found out ...sometimes, for drugs like Synthroid, the cash price is cheaper than the price the health insurance gives you. Sometimes a particular concentration of Synthroid is $25.00 when the cash price, with no insurance, is  only $ 20.00.

Can you get Chloraseptic mouth spray there?  If you can it will take care of most mouth sores.  It is an antiseptic, kills bacteria and such, and a pain reliever.  Know that you have problems affording all this, too, so I use the cheapest and easiest way to heal.  It works wonders on canker sores, strep throat, fever blisters, lots of stuff.  It also dulls the pain with the saliva gland sores and helps them to go away faster for me.

Wish you could find something for the pain in your legs.  Do they do cortisone shots--steroids--in joints there?  If they do I would try to get one.  They give long acting ones in the joint that hurts and usually it lasts for quite a while, plus if there is something wrong with swelling involved in it, sometimes it will lessen the swelling for long enough to help the problem clear up.  The shots are pretty painful, but well worth it in the long run to be out of so much pain.

Am praying that you get some relief and good news soon.
