I also have osteoporosis and high PTH and elevated calcium serum. My Vit.D came out at 8.5. I'm taking 50,000 IU once a week. I'm also taking blood tests every two weeks to monitor it. After the first two weeks, my D came up to 16 but it further elevates my calcium which is no good for me. (I'm not allowed to take any calcium suppliments)

You said you're calcium is normal. Different labs have different range references. What is your serum calcium number? And yes, your serum parathyroid should be checked! PTH is parathyroid. My doc is also checked my T3 & T4 -TSH. I'm seeing an endocronologist. What kind of doctor is taking care of this for you?

I just found out I have low Vit. D too, but it's hard to find what the range is on line.  Mine was 19 and I really don't know how low that is!  I had a total thyroidectomy in May 08 for cancer.  Two of my parathyroids were taken during surgery and I had very low calcium while in the hospital for that.  That seems to be under control now, my calcium level was "fine" but now my vit. D is down.  I am on 50,000 units once a week for four weeks and then test again - boy am I getting tired of getting stuck with needles!!  It seems like I'm in there all the time!!

Bottom line - I didn't know parathyroids did anything with vitamin D, I just thought they controlled calcium.  Anyway, I'm glad it's being taken care of!
