Levothyroxine & Shakiness

by lilypad300, Aug 27, 2008 08:42AM
For the 1st hour or so after I take my levothyroxine (synthroid)  .175mcg, I get a shaky feeling, as time goes on, it dissipates. . .is this "relatively" normal, or is it something that I should mention to my doctor.
I have a list of questions to ask him, but I'm loathe to ask too many silly ones of out of fear of being labeled a difficult or crazy patient.

(i like & trust my doctor, but i fear that i'm one nutty question away from the edge.)

thanks all!

LOL lillipad - I feel the same way about one more question being the difference in continued treatment or him pauning me off!  -  I took too low of a dose on Synthroid to know the answer to your question (25 Levothyroxine), but I know that for the first 30 min to 1 hour after I take my Armour I get a funny feeling in my chest and a little of a funny feeling in my head.  I take my Armour in 2 doses and it does not happen with the second dose.  I think, for me, it just may be the morning wake up and take med thing (harder to handle in the a.m. - I am not a morning person, so go figure!)

That is a kind of large dose of synthroid, how were your blood levels?  Has the med been recently increased?  I am just throwing questions out there ..... if it is an increase, your body has to have time to get used to the extra hormone.

my dose hasn't been  increased, i've been on the .175 since my surgery on 8/04/08 so a little over 3 weeks.  I went to the doctor's on monday and saw a med. student before my doctor.  she said that my dosage maybe a little high, but the doctor didn't say anything.  i get more blood work next wed. (TSH & T4/Free) and then see the doctor on that friday.  so I guess we'll see.  it was just a very strange sensation that was new.

thanks!

Question 2:

I know you need to wait 4 hours to take calcium supplements, but when it comes to eating breakfast, can you eat yogurt or milk earlier than the 4 hour mark?
I'm wondering if taking the  synthroid I normally wait 4 hours to eat after taking the pill so perhaps my stomach is too empty for too long and the medicine is causing the shakiness because there is nothing at all but synthroid in my system. . .

Lilypad - again, I am guessing here but I seem have a problem with diary myself and it worsened after thyroid med.  There is something about calcium products that henders absorption of the med or effectiveness or something to that effect.  When I was on Levo, I waited the hr and then ate a non-dairy product (I like toast) but that's just me.  Now that I take armour and let it dissolve under the tongue, I don't have the wait problem and am able to drink a slim fast w/ no problem.  I don't think synthroid can be done that way.  I would try to eat something after the hr if I were you, just to see if it can stop some of the shakiness.  I really think the PA is right, maybe your dose is too high but they did the right thing by making sure they did not let you go hypo??  Just my thoughts.  I hope it gets better soon for you. :)

I've been taking 150mcg of synthroid for 3 yrs and I too get the jitters.  I was told that it would go away, but it hasn't. As far as asking questions, it's your Endos job to answer them for you. That's  why you went to him/her to begin with. Don't be afraid to ask!!!!!!I I too use to feel that way, however, my Primary care and Surgeon also help answer my questions when needed.  I kind of spread the questions around a bit between the three of them. Some times I'll ask them all the same question, just to see if they have the same answers. It's fun to mess with their heads once in awhile LOL.

It is necessary to wait 4 hours after synthroid before taking calcium supplements, but the same is not true for food.  I have been told that it is ok to eat anything 1 hour after synthroid. I think it is because food takes a while to digest and get absorbed. The key is to be consistent when taking your meds. If you take it on an empty stomach, then always do so, and if you take it with food then always do so.  God luck.

I used to get that in the beginning along with nausea equated to morning sickness and zero tolerance for liquor (wine) which was enhanced and all of it went away with time.  Mention to your Dr of course.
