Low-iodine

by thyroid_questions, Jun 21, 2008 09:49PM
How long did you have to be on the low-iodine diet prior to your I-131 whole body scan? My doctor didn't say anything about low-iodine. I came to my attention by accident. I will call my doctor on Monday. Thanks.

I was on for about 2 weeks prior to RAI.  Are you having RAI due to cancer or Graves? I'm not sure if it depends on the reason.

I am having RAI due to thyroid cancer. Shoot!!! I am screwed. I am a week into my withdrawal, and no one told me about the low-iodine. I will start the diet tomorrow, and will call the doctor first thing on Monday. :(((((((

What is the date of your RAI?  IF you had a TT and are withdrawing from meds, it may not be late for you. I used Thyrogen, so I didn't have to stop my synthroid, but it is different for people who don't use Thyrogen. Are you seeing an endocrinologist or an oncologist?

If you are having Throgen don't panic unduly - a week on LID should be sufficient according to my Endo.

D@mn!!! my old school endo... I did it the "old-fashioned" way...  weeks and weeks of no meds...(ok, well it seemed like that long...), two weeks LID.  And it S^CKED!  Don't recommend it at all!  Grab those thyrogen shots and RUN.  Had I known they were approved by the FDA, I would have been all up in my "old school" endo's grill!  Good luck with your RAI!

Yeah - the old fashioned way is no fun!  I went without meds and on the LID for 4 1/2 weeks for my treatment dose!!   I was able to do thyrogen for the scan last year and that was *SO* much easier.  We'll see what I have to do this time.  Call the endo about the LID (it was actually the nuclear medicine department at my hospital that put me on the LID and gave me the diet)

I just got a full body scan, then the RAI yesterday morning. They said I had to stay on LID until Friday. I plan a big breakfast at the diner! I am reading so many conflicting recommendations that I don't know what is best anymore. I'd really love to go out and eat tonight. What's another 12 hours anyway?? I get my next scan next Tuesday morning.
