Lower TSH= lower cholesterol (for me)

by kitty9309, Dec 02, 2008 10:36AM
Hi everyone!
I have interesting news.

Prior to being treated for my "subclinical" hypothyroidism, my TSH was always between 3.5 and 6.0.
During that time, my cholesterol was always about 237 with LDL's around 130.

Well....
Last September, I finally started Synthroid (now Levoxyl) and my cholesterol has dropped 54 points! It is now 183 with LDL's of 111!
I have not exercised or concentrated too hard on my diet. I do eat fairly well. but could do better in the fruit/vegatable department! Basically, less exercise than ever with the dizziness from my Lyme, which I start treatment for tomorrow.

My (former PCP) was willing to put me on cholesterol medication, but not willing to rx thyroid meds! I wuld love to send him these results! When will they learn?

Hi Kitty --

Since starting Methimazole last year for Hyper T, my thyroid levels have dropped nearer to Hypo T ranges.  My cholesterol went from 148 to 256 in 13 months.  The Endo had me add fiber to my diet.  That has lowered the cholesterol to 232.  But my LDL is still at 156 (was at 169).  So it is coming down, but wow it takes alot of work:)

Hoping that once I continue lowering the dose of Methemazole that my cholesterol will straighten itself out too.

Interesting.
It will likely return to normal.
It is amazing to me that all it took was a truly normal TSH and no work on my part except taking the med. (Oh and researching and diagnosing myself...lol)

Good luck with your recovery, HyperT77.

Congratulations on the good news, kitty!

I'm anxious to see if my cholesterol falls into line after I have a few more months of the thyroid med dosage I am taking. I am guessing the numbers will look better.

I hope things keep imroving for you.

That's great news Kitty.

I too hope my numbers continue to decrease. They are creeping down - but very slow for me.

I hope all the treatment for Lyme's goes well for you too!

Take care -
