Your doctor is erring on the side of caution and that is a good thing! Biopsy, whilst uncomfortable are often needed to rule out any nasties. 99% of biopsies show cysts or nodules which are totally harmless.
You say your tests came back normal. Do you know what they were? Can you go get a copy of them to show us? Many times doctors say normal but the reference ranges are often out of date. Do you have any symptoms? Is the lump annoying you in any way?
Often in pregnancy or after the birth it is noticed a change in the thyroid. This is due to the changes in the body during pregnancy. Your baby will be fine when you go for the ultra sound and biopsy.
Cheers!
When i first had issues with my thyroid i was pregnant with my daughter as well ultrasound is perfectly safe and biopsy is to. it will not harm your baby sometimes with the hormones your thyroid can become inflamned that is why it has swollen good that your levels are ok could just be inflamation or a cyst have it checked out .
Sounds like me. I never noticed the lump in my neck until after I had my baby and we both were pretty sick 3 mos later with a cold. I just thought it was a swollen gland from that and it took me a year to get it checked out. I have a multi-nodule cyst that was 7cm in Jan09 until the ENT drained it and biopsied it. But the goiter grew back in just a few weeks and now I am waiting for an app. with an Endocrinologist. I did the ultrasound and tests came back normal for thyroid. The biopsy is painful but then you'll know if its benign.
Are you experiencing any health problems besides the lump. Do you have heart palpitations or muscle wekaness or weightloss or gain. My baby weight came off fast and I weighed less than back in highschool, I had a few really bad months of not feeling good but I am really being strict in my diet and I think that is why I am starting to feel better. The lump is still there but I keep researching trying to find answers. I think its hyperthyroidism. Get an app with an Endocrinologist because that is who you'll need. I was referred by my family practitioner to an ENT who referred me to his partner, etc..
I nursed my baby until she was 14mos. but I didn't take any meds. I did read that if you get the radioiodine for the thyroid removal that you can't be close to anyone, share same towel, hug, etc. for a few weeks.
I did stop nursing because it totally drained me, I got pretty sick. I am putting weight back on, if it stays where its at I will be happy. I am scared of flipping over to hypo instaed of hyper.
Good luck. Hope this didn't scare you to death.
