Lymph nodes

by MAH2552, Nov 27, 2007 06:23PM
I recently began experiencing symptoms of Hyperthyroidism- lost 20 lbs in about 10 weeks, shakey, palpitations, and feel like I am on a constant caffeine kick... coincidentally I also found lumps near my breast.  An ultrasound revealed enlarged lymph nodes in the axillary area.  My doctor ordered thyroid test which showed highly elevated thyroid peroxidase levels and thyroid globulin Abs.  I also feel like there are nodules in my neck, but my family doc did not really feel any.  I am concerned that the lymph nodes in my axilla are related.  I am now going for an US of my thyroid due to these findings- will a thyroid US also pick up on lymph nodes in the neck area?  Could this be a sign of cancer and not jsut the start of thyroid disease?

Hi MAH- yes, an u/s of the neck will/can show enlarged lymph nodes. It's interesting-- your presentation sounds exactly like what I went through prior to being diagnosed with Hashi's-- even the enlarged lymph nodes in the axillary area. Lymph nodes, however, can be enlarged for many, many reasons including infections, minor colds or viruses, and allergies just to name a few. So don't get all worked up about cancer at this point. You have a lot more testing to go--- don't stress prematurely. Good luck.
