MJ13 - another hair loss question

by shaerich, Jun 13, 2007 12:00AM
MJ,
When you lost your hair, did you lose your eyebrows and eyelashes too?  Last night, as I dreaded washing my hair I was pleasantly surprised that the hairloss was not as bad as on Saturday... then something fell in my eye and I wiped my eye to find a CLUMP OF EYELASHES on my finger.  And now there is a hole in my eyelashes.  I know I lose eyelashes here and there, but not 4 right in the same spot that leaves a hole.

Jenipeni, if you're reading this and have any input... I'd welcome it.

I have yet to be diagnosed (other than the huge multinodular goiter in my neck), but yes my hair is falling out on my head in clumps.  I actually counted one day and I had lost about 400 hairs.  I mean every time I touch it I get a huge handful.  I have thick hair luckily.. or did.. its thin now.  I'm sure I will be bald soon.  The edges of my eyebrows have fallen off as well.  I may have had some eye lashes, but not as much as you.  It doesn't surprise me though.  My doc told me to take biotin.  Are you taking it?  It is supposed to help with hairloss (even if it is cause by thyroid).

My problem is I don't HAVE a thyroid, so I'm worried that this is a side effect from the medication.  Will Biotin still work if my hair loss is a reaction to a drug?

by danie17075rm, Jun 13, 2007 12:00AM
It is just a vitamin.  A "B" vitamin.  Obviously check with your doc first, but I highly doubt it will interfere with anything.  I've never heard of side effects from it.

I'm not worried about the vitamin interfering with my Levoxyl... I'm just wondering if a vitamin or any remedy that will help b/c of thyroid being off will help if my hair loss is being CAUSED by the levoxyl.

The thing is, I started Levoxyl just 4 days after my TT, so I don't think I would have had enough time (nor did I feel any symptoms) to go hypo.  The hair loss started exactly 4 days after I started Levoxyl, or 8 days after surgery.

PLUS I had my levels checked last Tuesday and they were normal.

OH... well I'm not sure on that.  Maybe it will counteract the effects of the medication though.  Geez that sucks, the medication causes hair loss too.  I asked my doc how could this vitamin help if it had nothing to do with the cause, but she said it really does help keep your hair stronger, and promote new growth.  Call a health place by you.  Sometimes they can tell you.  They may be able to tell you if it will work in your case at all, being its caused from the medicine.

Boy, I had all this hair loss w/Graves, lost all the hair below my forehead, seriously.  Eyebrows, eyelashes, EVERYWHERE!  But after getting levels a little closer to normal and hormone replacement everything came back.  I do still have problems with hair loss on top of my head, though.  I am on 125mcg Levothyroxine.

Don't know if it helps any, but that's my story.  Good luck to you I know exactly how upsetting it is.  Wanted someone to shave my head for me back when it was falling out in clumps.  Boy, am I glad they all refused to.

I think you need to call dr and check this out.  If you can't get ahold of dr at least call pharmacist and talk to them about it.

I have visions of shaving my head every day.  It's so stressful I just think if I shaved it, I could ease some tension and just get it over with.

I did cut my hair very short and it seemed to help it not fall out as bad.  Either that or the fact that it was so short that the lose ones didn't seem quite as bad. :)  I kept mine really conditioned which didn't keep it moisturized for more than an hour or so, but this did give me just enough time to comb it.  I went for the natural look.  Well, as natural as a person can look with almost no hair, no eyebrows, and no eye lashes anyway.

Now I have that disease where you grow hair ALL over your face from being hypo so long and have to even shave my eye lids.  Some days think I would be willing to go back to no hair anywhere other than this.  Guess people like me are just never satisfied. ;)  You know what they say about problems; 6 of one 1/2 dozen of the other.

I cut my hair short too, but it is still coming out just as bad.  It's not fair that you lose it where you want, and grow it where you don't.  I have hair that grows on my chin (really bad, I shaved it once and now it grows like stubble).  I pluck with tweezers constantly (I think I'm a tad obsessed) ha.  It's like a stress remover to tweeze.  Anyway, if my hair was going to fall out you would think it would fall out everywhere.  NO, now I have to be bald in my head and eyebrows, with a full beard on my chin.  Along with the extra weight that I can't get off.  Great... 28 and fat bald and hairy ha.  I didn't know that hypo caused facial hair though.  I wonder if thats my problem....

Just read recently about the hair growth, hypertrycosis(?) or something like that I think.  Said that it was caused by being hypo for extended period of time, 5 1/2 years for me.

My husband is going bald badly.  A male friend of his told him that as we age men go bald and women gain weight and this is God's way of evening things out.  Well, now I'm fat and hairy.  Think God has over done it on me! ;)

Ha thats funny.  Well maybe God just shows some people some extra love.  Unfortunately I'm single so it will be hard to meet a guy in this "condition" ha.  At least I'm finally getting things taken care of.  Hey on the bright side, Britney shaved her head so mayb it will become the new fad. =).  Or hairy fat women.. hey.. you never know ha.

I never had a problem losing eye lashes, but my left eyebrow has a little patch of hair missing, that I didn't pluck.  My question is...if we have to have hair fall out, why can't it be the hair on our legs and underarms...where most of us don;t want hair!!!!???!!!!

My hairdresser is hypo and she tells me she occasionally loses more hair than normal.

Thanks... I wonder if it's just coincidence?  Goodness, I hope so.  I REALLY hope so.
