I am 12 months post RAI and doing great :)
All the best.
Thanks everyone for the insightfull information. This web forum has been a big help and a stress reducer. I will definately keep all appointments and hope for the best. It's been three weeks on 30mg of methimazole and I have seen a decrease in groiter size. As anyone else have the same experience? I am very sorry to hear about cancer, surgery and RAI. You'll be in my thoughts, god speed to fast recovery!
I was started on 30mg daily and went from hyper to hypo every 2 weeks.
keep a check on yr levels as depending on the persons reactions to meds, they can go hypo very quick.
Unfortunately Methimazole (Carbimazole) wasnt enough for me and nearly a year later I underwent RAI (finding out 2 days before RAI) that I had Thyroid Cancer resulting in a Thyroidectomy 3 months after RAI.
Its important to make sure you take the meds and keep the FT3 and FT4 levels down as you can go into thyroid storm (Atrial Fibrillation) if you dont get those levels down.
Ask your Doctor to be re-evaluated every 3-4 weeks.
Some suggest 6 weeks but I think thats too long with ATD's.
30mg is the normal starting dose for Hyperthyroidism and Graves....slowly decreasing as the bloods start to stabalise.
I was started on 25mg in July (my T4 & T3 were also very high) and in December my Endo was finally able to lower it. Since January I've been on 12.5mg. And still patiently waiting for surgery...
I was on 30 mg when I was first diagnosed - my T4 and T3 were "astronomical" and my TSH was non-existent (really, really hyper) when I first started methimazole.
Make sure you go to your first blood test when scheduled and don't postpone it (learned the hard way that timing is important - had to go out of town and rescheduled for 3 weeks later and was totally hypothyroid by then!).
You won't likely stay on 30 mg for long - dosage will decrease as your levels respond. I was taking 5mg one day and 10 mg the next by the time I had my TT a year later.
Good luck to you!
I don't really remember the dosage I was on, but that sounds correct - from what I remember.
I suppose it would be based on what your labs were.
