Hello,
I hope I am in the correct forum to ask my question….
I would like to know which Antithryoid medication (PTU/ Methimazole/ Carbimazole gets better results for a hyperthyroid/Graves patient going into remission?
I read a phenomenal book by Mary Shomon “Living Well With Graves disease: What Your Doctor’s Don’t Tell You”, I am sure all of you have seen or heard about this book and this book has a page where it compares the pro’s and con’s of PTU and Methimazole.
Methimazole in smaller doses is more effective in assisting a HYPERthyroid/Graves manage their Thyrpid levels and help the person get into remission for a longer time than PTU but when taken in more higher doses can create liver problems in the future, whereas PTU taken in multiple monitored doses can also be effective in helping a hyperthyroid patient go into remission quicker than Methimazole but also has risky side effects too?
OK, now I am beyond terrified of having RAI treatment done period, yes I know its safer and “supposedly” successful but not one doctor has been able to convince me of what RAI treatment can do which is open up more problems than ever, not one person has be able to convince me that when they had this RAI perform that going on Synthroid afterwards “supposedly” mess them up even further. And I am not a lab rat for my endocrinologist to try the RAI treatment and yes I know if hyper is left untreated, I can die, no if’s, and’s, or but’s about it. But I was told by another endo that I can live on medication if I so choose and guess what, that is route I am leaning towards. I don’t care how much either medication costs, money right now is nowhere near important to me as having this hyperthyroid issue managed. This thyroid issue of mine can’t be cured so no matter which way I lean towards repairing my little old self I have to think of me.
Is there anyone patients on here who have been able to successfully live off of either Antithyroid medication and if so which one and have you suffered an ill side effects, such can kidney or liver problems as of yet? Have any of you suffered an allergic reactions to the meds and also how long did you take these Antithyroid meds before you went into remission? And how long are you guys in remission? Have any of you had any side effects after remission and how many times after that do you have to have blood tests done before or after remission?
I am 32 years old and I am concerned about the decision I have made. And I would like to thank all of you who take the time to answer my question(s)?
Thank you.
