Migraine type headaches started when I started synthroid a month ago!!!

It's been awhile since I posted last.  A little over a month ago I started back on my synthroid 100 and went through the downs of being hypothyroid for the first time.  Ironically, I started having daily migraine type headaches ( because they are always in a different spot ) otc meds didn't touch it.  Had MRI and lumbar puncture to rule out other things, my new pcp actually the PA put me on elavil to abort these headaches now for the last two weeks, don't know yet it's working, but now he's saying it's unusual for someone my age to be having headaches like this!  I feel it's some  how hormone related to my thyroid.  Why is it that doctors aren't required to know this stuff.  Sometimes people aren't always "text book"!  The month before these headaches started and my thyroid got back where it was suppose to be, I went from hypER thyroid to hypO thyroid in a month.  My Endo said it was the tale end of all of this, and didn't offer me any real answers or meds, just to function I had to go to the PCP.  Did any of you go through this coming off of hypothyroid untill there thyroid was back under control??  How long does it take for these daily migraine type headaches stop??  What did you take??  Someone once said ginger or cinammon???  What's in that, that makes the headache go away??

Thank you for your post! I just started taking 175 mcg of synthroid and started having headaches!!  Migrane type.. put me to bed a couple of times!  I remember thinking when I opened my new bottle that I had never taken the purple color before!!   I just called my doctor and reported the problem, it was very nice to be able to make a suggestion!! Hopefully he will take me off the purple and also give me a combination of others !!   Thanks again I think you have really helped me !!

I wanted to give an update on my migraines and how I have been feeling lately. I spoke to my endo and he said the only reason I would get migraines from the Synthroid is if I had a sensitivity to the food dye they use to coat the medicine with. So they took me off the one pill of .175 mcg a day and had me start taking 3.5 pills of the .05 mcg a day and guess what? The increase in migraines has stopped! The pharmacist said that a lot of people have migraines with the dye on the pills, so you might want to try that and see if that is something that decreases your migraines. I also asked my primary care doctor if she could run some blood tests for me since I was having issues with not only the migraines but also low back and leg muscle weakness, severe depression, constant fatigue, and flu like symptoms and I just got the results back this morning. They said I am extremely low in vitamin D, insomuch that I need to start taking 2000 IU of over the counter Vitamin D daily as well as 50,000 IU per week for about the next three months. After that they will check my levels again. I know this is going to sound weird, but I am so relieved that they found something because it means it's not really all in my head! I hope this helps you. Let me know how things go.

thanks for posting.  I'm going to ask my doctor to check my labs even though he's not my Endo.  My Endo checked everything and they were where they should be, but from what I've been reading you can't always just go by labs.  My headaches started when I started back on my synthroid after being off for a week to 10 days.  I just started topomax, which is a medicine you won't notice any reljief from for at least a few weeks, wonderful, but imitrex did not help, so it's not migraine.  My Endo is out until Aug. 31.  Hoping to go to a Neuro.  Some days are better than others, which fools me to thinking I'm better, but I  haven't felt like myself for some time.  These headaches are "migraine like" it could be still thyroid stuff, idk, but I have been depressed, and lost doing things with my kids this summer and school just started, it upsets me that my son says he did not have a good summer.

I have been on Synthroid for the past few months (after TT and RAI treatment for thyroid cancer) and they just recently increased my dosage to .175 mcg a day. Since then I have had daily migraines insomuch that I have been missing work and locked up in my apartment for the past ten days or so. I thought I was the only one to feel this way, but after reading your post I feel a sense of relief. The only thing I have been able to do to relieve the pain is put a cold (as cold as you can stand it) wet washcloth or hand towel over my eyes and forehead and then I try to sleep in a cool, dark room. When the pain is too much I take some tylenol just to take the edge off a bit. I have some pretty hard core medicine that I can take, but it usually knocks me out for long periods of time and when I wake up again the migraine is still there, so I try to avoid taking them. I've suffered from migraines for the past ten years, but this last bout has been really hard for me. I definitely think it has to do with my TSH levels being off and not where they should be to make me feel better. I have heard that lavendar or peppermint oils help if you gently rub them into your temples. Different things work for different people, but I certainly hope you can get it under control soon. Good luck and all my best thoughts.

My bad headaches went away after Synthroid, but I am having one this morning for the first time. If I drink a Pedialyte in the morning, it usually helps. I'm not much help here. Sorry. Maybe someone more experienced can help you. Do you have new labs that you can post?

Take care...
