Missed periods????

by baz5, Nov 03, 2009 10:44AM
I am 36 years old and have missed 4-5 months of menstrual cycles. I have Hashimotos Hypothyroid and Fibromyalgia.
So far all of my hormone tests have come up normal.  Can anyone tell me how that is possible??

Which thyroid labs have you had recently?

If available post your most recent thryoid related labs with reference ranges and we can try and see if it is being caused by that.

when did you start taking synthroid?

anything you can think of 4 or 5 months ago that changed? medication? diet? excercise? stress?

have you done any testing for ovulation for the last few months?

when did they do these tests? FSH test plus estrogen, testosterone, dhea, etc...

I started taking synthroid in Feb 09. I have been on the same meds except for Lyrica, which i started after my periods started to be skipping.  Im in a ton of pain and tired all the time.  My tests were done last week and i got a call yesterday that they came out normal.  Its like my car doesnt work but the mechanic says every looks fine!
Im getting very depressed and the pain is getting worse.

hi baz5. i also have hypothyroidism. just got back my lab results, TSH 1.45, in range. everything else also in rage, some more to the lower side, but still in range. they also tested all of my hormones, came up in range, except my testosterone was 95 (range: 10 or 20-70), last sept.2008 it was highly elevated too (dont know the number). have so much acne all over my body, esp.on my upper legs. aweful! tired, sometimes hot flashes, night sweats, swollen lymphnodes here and there, tender breasts with painful swellings under both breast along the rip bone. is all that fibromyalgia too? my doc wrote a code for that on a lab work prescription. still waiting for my next results from blood tests for RF, ANA and Prolactin. always had cysts (sometimes really big ones) on my ovaries, lucky to have 2 boys!!!!! was so difficult to even get pregnant. did they check your testosterone too? let them give you a copy of all lab results, you are allowed to have it, you are the patient!

by the way, i am 32 years old.and how did they find out you have fibromyalgia?

by dpleiman, Nov 03, 2009 12:27PM
based on your symptoms i would be interested in seeing your TSH, Free T3 and Free T4 tests.. Just because your TSH is within limits doesn't mean that your Free T3 and Free T4 are in range OR that your in a symptom free normal zone.. you could be in range but still have symptoms of hypothyroid including missed periods.. I would get the Free's tested and post them.. If you are having other symptoms of hypothyroid then you are probably undermedicated...

process of elimination ...i guess.  Had all of the "usual" autimmune tests done.  ANA was slightly high once then normal later.

TSH: 1.45 (Range from Lab > OR = 20 YEARS: 0.40-4.50),
T3 Uptake: 31 (Range: 22-35%);
T4 (Thyroxine) Total: 10.3 (Range: 4.5 - 12.5 mcg/dL) ;
Free T4 Index (T7): 3.2 (Range: 1.4 - 3.8)

doctor said i am fine with that!

did you see how high my testosterone was? 95!! Range is in that lab 20-70. i know about my high testosterone level since sept.2008. i think i could have fibromyalgia, or and PCOS. but i cant afford to get an ultrasound for my ovaries, so how can i know?

It could also be something unrelated to thyroid just coincidentally... The only other thing i can think of is that Fibromyalgia causes depression and anxiety in addition to many other problems. Studies do suggest that stress due to depression or anxiety can cause hormonal imbalances leading to cycle irregularities including amenorrhea or absence of periods.

High Testosterone: Adrenal gland disorders and ovarian problems, often caused by other hormonal imbalances, create an over-abundance of testosterone. The most common, testosterone increasing disease is Polycystic Ovarian Syndromes, which causes high testosterone. Diabetes can also sometimes can lead to these endocrine upsets.

Fibromyalgia diagnosis: The difficulty with diagnosing fibromyalgia lies in the fact that, in most cases, laboratory testing appears normal and that many of the symptoms mimic those of other disorders. A definite diagnosis of fibromyalgia syndrome should only be made when no other medical disease can explain the symptoms. This is to say, fibromyalgia is a diagnosis of exclusion.
Fibromyalgia Tender Points
Upon physical examination, the fibromyalgia patient will be sensitive to pressure in certain areas of the body called tender points. To meet the diagnostic criteria, patients must have:

Widespread pain in all four quadrants of their body for a minimum of three months. Pain is considered widespread when all of the following are present:
•Pain in the left side of the body
•Pain in the right side of the body
•Pain above the waist
•Pain below the waist
•Pain in the neck, front of your chest, mid-back, or low back

by baz5, Nov 03, 2009 01:54PM
I'd say that pretty widespread!! LOL!

since jan.i have this big swelling over right knee, which sometimes makes it impossible to sit on my knees or even walk, sometimes both knees hurt and i can barely walk, only under pain. my sugar is in range, my cholesterol etc everything just fine. my greatgrandfather had Juven.RA (went on a walking thing with age of 12!), his daughter (my grandma) has RA and also her son (my dad) had it, my grandma breast cancer, her sister also, my dad died on several kinds of cancer (widespread in his whole body). well, thats a reason i will have my first mammo next week, after that yearly than, the radiologist told me so. what can that be with the breast pain and tenderness? the radiol.touched everywhere to feel for lumps etc and i am so tender ,he told me, because every touch hurted me in some way. sometimes i have backpain, low and high, i also have since almost 3 months now tailbone pain, it is always there but not always very painful. uncomfortb.all the times. and i always had problems with ice cold hands in winter months (white icy hands), now i live in florida, not that big issue anymore, but still have the ice cold feet since jan.2008. and i also sometimes cannot stand any noises or smells and always get so fast angry or mad, like persistent mood swings... and body aches from head to toe, not always at the same time on all the places, it switches from time to time. doc told me so far that i will stay with the 50MCG for my thyroid because my results are in range. but still have all my symptoms and some got worse over the time. how to check for PCOS? ultrasound?

Can thyroid be causing this???

by dpleiman, Nov 05, 2009 02:33PM
What is the reference ranges for the FSH and Hydroxyprogesterone?

by dpleiman, Nov 05, 2009 02:44PM
Have you had any thyroid symptoms over the last 6 months? Hair loss, fatigue, cold intolerance, OR hyper symptoms jittery, anxiety, rapid pulse, insomnia? please list the symptoms you have had over the last 6 months.. Also,

What date was your last period and how was it?

I don't think it is menopause, i wouldn't worry about that...

by dpleiman, Nov 05, 2009 02:50PM
Your Free T4 shows kind of high based on my range.. what is the reference range for your Free T4? Oh and your TSH reference range?

I havent had a period since god knows when...up to 5 months.
I have fatigue, pain, weight gain, always had thin hair,  very dry skin lately, swelling hands, stiffness in ankles, memory loss, and I get very hot fast..hot flashes.

My free t4 reference range is  0.8-1.8

by baz5, Nov 05, 2009 04:53PM
I called my Doctor to find out why he had not called.  He basically had no idea who i was and told me oh ...your in menopause.  I told him his nurse said my lab came ouut normal..he said ..she doesnt know your history.  I said ..then maybe you shouldnt have your nurse call back your results then!!!  Idiot!  He said my thyroid was normal and to go see my obgyn.  He is an ***!!
Im going to find a new Doctor...thank god i have PPO!

by dpleiman, Nov 05, 2009 08:11PM
Wow.. yeah i think i'd have to find a new doc too... I'm not sure if anything other than menopause can cause your labs to indicate menopause.. Post a new thread on here and in the subject line put postmenopausal question and ask if anything other than actual menopause can cause your labs to appear that way.. There are alot of experienced people on here that can probably answer than better than i can. It just seems like 36 is young to be menapause...

hi.i was reading your symptoms. since jan2008 shortly after my 2nd boy was born i had one month long bad hair loss, and my hair is since then very dry, still losing more or less, so much acne esp.on my upper legs, so much more hair on my back in my face, my voice sounds deeper, weight gain (before i got pregnant second time: 145lbs, after birth of 2nd son had 149 lbs; NOW 170lbs! i am tall with 5.85 but still this is too much weight for me!!!). ice cold feet, i mean still after 2 years and after 1 year on thyorid med.50mcg that very icy feet, irritable, angry, aggressive, and a lot more. very irregular periods, and i have tailbone pain. was reading in med book and online, that fibroids on uterus can cause tailbone pain. have to go to the endo or ob/gyn to find out more. all my blood tests were in range accept: testosterone with 95! way to high, last year it was lower but also very high.maybe PCOS, hypothyroidsm, fibroids and some issue with the adrenal glands - they produce too much androgene too in women. my female hormone are in range. dont know anything else to look for. sometimes you have all that sympt.because you are in peri-menopause, my doc thought so at first too. but my female hormone are normal.
