I posted not too long ago about having Hash's..........levels are in the "normalNormal saline flush" range but I feel horrible like many of you. My brother (who is a Dr.) agreed to give me 25 mcg of Synthroid to see how it works. Well I have been taking it since last Friday..........and already I feel better. However, get this........have gained 4 pounds and am sooooo bloated that I feel gross and my pants are tight. I have read that this is an issue with this medication. I hate this since I do feel better. I am going to stop taking this medication............I have NEVER gained this much weight in a short period of time or felt this bloated.
I feel this is a mistake but I just do not know where to go from here. ArmourArmour thyroid is not an option really as he and several others do not "believe" it works as well.
I believe that the synthroid should help your metabolism work better, not make it worse. You should be losing weight with synthroid and gaining when you are "hypo", i.e., low.
Please post your actual free T3 (FT3), free T4 (FT4) and TSH results and their reference ranges. Too often we hear that everything is "normal" only to find that testing was inadequate or reference ranges obsolete. I wish I had a borother who was a doctor!
Don't worry about the weight gain...it's residual from your being hypo, not a result of the Synthroid. It will go away once your thyroid hormones level out.
I am having the same problem you are. I am bloated and gaining weight. I gained 6 pounds in a matter of weeks. I never gained that much. I am the heaviest that I have ever been in my 30 years of life. My md just changed my meds. Lets see how that works out.
I agree with goolarra, one week on the meds is not long enough to give it a chance to help you, in fact the first few weeks it can really mess with your hormones until you're body gets used to it..... I say give it a shot for 6 weeks, if you still have bloating after that then re-evaluate.
When i took my first dose it made my period come 2 weeks early.... perhaps that is happening to you with the bloating? Any time I get an increase in my synthroid my period comes 2 weeks after the increase regardless of where I am in my cycle. Just saying that it could be the medicine causing it until you adjust!!!
Thanks all..........I am just freaking out. I am not technically hypo and have never gained weight........I am experiencing symptoms (TSH is over 2----2.9) so they decided to try me on meds. This weight gain is new. That scares me. This whole time I have never been bloated or gained weight----even during my period I do not bloat. My stomach is distended and I look pregnant (I am not) :). This is new for me and the only change is the meds.
I will keep trying and see what happens. :) Thanks

Ask your brother for FT3 and FT4, along with TSH.
