Thyroids history that might help others. Please read:
June 10th 2006 (approx), while we were on vacation in Europe I was experiencing flu/cold-like aches all over my body. Headaches, restless nights, joint-pains, strange pains on both sides of my neck, just below my ears and straight down to the front of my neck. Night sweating. Pain-killers like Advile really helped.
Back in the USA June 28th 2006 my doctor indicated that it was arthritis and prescribed me (ETODOLAC) some kind of arthritis pain killer (it nearly killed me alright, rather than the pain).
I took the medication for two days and that was it, threw them down the toilet, cost me $12.
2nd visit July 17th I insisted on a blood test as my health in general was deteriorating at a fast pace. From 194Ibs I went down to 174lbs. Headaches, fever, palpitation, aches all over my body, could not sleep at night unless I would take (IBUPROFEN) one pill a day would be ok. I lost all my strength, and all I wanted to do was sleep and rest. The pain on one side of my neck had gone but my R/H side had gotten worse, I could not swallow properly either. Days later my blood test results indicated that I had an Overactive Thyroid. My doctor suggested the following: June 26th-Aug 3rd. X-ray/neck, Heart Sonogram, Thyroid Sonogram, Thyroid Uptake Scan. Results: X-ray/neck no problem, Heart Sonogram no problem, Thyroid Sonogram no problem, Thyroid Uptake Scan no problem. By Aug 5th my body had recover considerably for the better other than, that I could still not swallow properly and still at 174lbs, though I was eating well.
Aug15th I had another blood test as recommended by my doctor. Results: Underactive Thyroids. At this point my body is back to almost “normal” with no pains or aches. Now he wants me to take “SYMTOMS” and see an Endocrinologist.
Aug 25, I feel better with no pains and regain some of my weight, 184lbs. The interesting thing about all this is that I had been experiencing similar symptoms to the Thyroids sickness but not all.
I might want to add that my Cholesterol Total went down too, from 225 Total same time 2005 to 130 Total 2006. “Had lost a lot of weight probably that’s why”
By Sept 2006 I felt great with no known symptoms other than a funny feel in my throat, I had gained my weight back, 191-194lbs. At that time I wanted to think that everything was "ok" but I guess I had to wait and see. I did try to make an appointment with a Endocronologist, they were all very busy and a long wait to see one. I gave up and never saw one as I was “ok” by then!!!
Sept 12th 2007 a year later.
I had to see my doctor for my annual check-up “Doctor not happy with my actions” Check-up everything ok, however, I had to have some blood-work as he wanted to check for Cholesterol, Prostate and Thyroids. Blood-work results show that my TSH is 8.221 H uIU/ml “Underactive Thyroid” Cholesterol Total 255, Trig 209, HDL 35, VLDL 42, LDL 178. He’s asked me to take Synthroid for two months, after two months he wants me to have another blood test.
About myself:
I am 59yrs, almost 60. 6'2" 191-194lbs, haven’t smoke for almost 40yrs. I look and feel like when I was in my early 50s. I walk-run 3 miles 3-4 times a week and I am not in “any medication” other than what I have been prescribed now. I have been taking B-Complex and Multi Vitamins for years and I try to eat healthy. I have no pains and feel good about myself “Thank Good”. My question: is this medication “Synthroid” going to make me loose weight? Not that I want to, however, I am concerned, and what other side effects are there that we do not know about?
Thanks and good luck to everyone.
Overall, I'm glad Armour worked for me. I was taking time off (One or two days) per week during the month of June due to fatigue and just can't function mentally due to brain fog. My work requires a lot of thinking to fix problems and had to take a long medical leave for hypo and hernia surgery. I started taking Armour two days before coming back to work and glad the brain fog stopped.
I don't work a lot in the computers. My job is more movement...climbing, walking, standing, and bending. I do have to work on my posture, so I do a lot of shoulders, neck and back exercises.
I do want to check my Free-T3. I beleive if Free-T3 is low, it can affect my brain function even though other tests are fine.
Take care,
Rick
Glad to get updates from you both. I have been taking T3 for almost 3 weeks now and although not every day is fantastic, I do notice I have more energy than before. THis for me means staying awake past 8:30 or 9. Last night I crashed at 9:30 but the night before I was wide awake at midnight. These evening hours (after the kids are put to bed) are invaluable to me to get things done: cleaning the house, paying bills, etc.
DRick, overall, are you glad you went to armour?
Thanks for posting. Glad you're feeling better. My labs (TSH, FT3, FT4) all came back good on just synthroid, but still fatigued. Have noticed improvement last few days since taking water-based multivitamins, B12 and Biotin.
The shoulders and neck sound like stress and posture. Do you sit at a computer for the better part of the day? How about holding the telephone between your head and shoulder? Kills me every time!! Massage is a beautiful thing, but sometimes you have to shop around before you find a masseuse with just the right touch.
Looking forward to hearing from you in October, if not before.
