Need of Thyroid Medicine?

I am 26, when I was three I had a growth removed from my Thyroid because I suffered hypothyroidism.  I don't recall being on any meds after that.  When I turned 23, I gained about 50 pounds in a few months...my hair started breaking and I was always tired.  I also had experienced with the drug extacy.  I never thought I had a thryoid problem...but after becoming severely depressed I went to an ANP, had some blood work done.  It came back that my thryroid was again hypo.  I was placed on 10mg/daily of wethroid and 300mg of wellbutrin.  After 6 months of the cpmbination of those two pills i have lost 40 pounds, and have retained my energy.  I quit taking the westhroid back in novemeber of 06, but continued with the well butrin.  I have been finding myself extremely tired and noticed that my hair is beginning to break.  I haven't seen any new fluctuation in weight, but i am very unmotivated to much of anything.  Not an all depressed.  I had my blood taken in march with the result of 3.08.  one paplet said it should be 0-2.5, then I recieved another that said .5-5.0 is in range.  I have made appoinments with two nurses and both have rescheduled...It is now mid-may and i am unsure if i should continue to seek help with the range variation.  All I want to know is if I should start taking the Westhroid again.  Thanks for your help.

Think you ought to wait and talk to your dr.  You really don't want to mess around with your thyroid on your own.  Not taking it when you need it can cause lots of problems, but taking it when you don't need it can too.  Hang in there until they run the tests and see what they say.  Having experienced how much damage a thyroid can do to you, I wouldn't take the chance on my own.  Be patient.

I agree with DLA, you need to see an ANP or endo before restarting the wethroid.  But I will let you know that I was hyperthyroid and on meds for a year and then went into remission so I went off my meds.  About 3 1/2 years later I developed a bunch of new symptoms and surprise, surprise my hyperthyroidism was back (I thought I had lupus).  So at least in my experience when I went out of remission my symptoms were different than the first time so perhaps that is what is happening to you.  But when I was restarted on my medicine they put me on a different dosage than previously because of where my tsh level was.  I hope you can get in to see a provider soon.
