Need to go down on a 16 TSH

Hi,

My thyroid was removed completely when i was 12 years old due to CA.  On and off ive been "playing" with the amount of synthroid i drink and the timing of the pills (playing without understanding the importance of drinking the pills).  For 30 years i drink the pills whenever i feel the need to drink them for some time and then since i feel "ok" i forget to drink them.

Now for some time ive been feeling very bad, to many head aches.  I tested the TSH and its on 16, how can i take it down to 3????  The past Doctors that ive seen have said i need a .3 mg dose - but for how long? always since i dont have the gland?

Thank you,!

hello.

You need to take your thyroid meds consistently.  This means every day without fail. For the rest of your life.

Your target TSH should be between 1 and 2.

I can't say for sure what dose you need.  However, a 0.3 mg dose could be a starting point.  YOu take this dose EVERY day for at least 6 weeks.  Then you test TSH again.  If your TSH is high (ie. > 3.0 then you increase your dose slightly depending how high it is, maybe increase by 25 mcg every day or every second day), if your TSH is low < 0.5 then you decrease your dose also by the same amount.

Best if you work closely with a doctor to get your levels stabilised and find the best level for you.

Please don't play with your thryoid levels.  These are very important to your health.

Thank you for your advise Sally.  Actually the dose i mention is 300mcg = 0.3mg.  Ive been on and off with this amount due to that i dont have a gland.  Anyhow, ill keep up with you in the next weeks for more results...

Happy New Year!
