New to Hypothroid

by danab23, Jun 21, 2007 02:01PM
I just found out I'm Hypothyroid.  My TSH levels were extremely high 149 and I have a goiter.  I started on 150 mg of generic synthroid last week and had really started to feel better.  I switched to 150 of brand Synthroid two days ago and I am feeling like **** again (very tired, irritable, not sleeping well, brain fog, feeling like I'm choking).  How long until I feel better and will I continue to have good days and bd until my levels go down (the Dr. wants me at TSH 2)?

Welcome to the forum!  try not to switch brands it can really mess with you I found I do better on the gereric levothyroxine than synthroid and I feel much better. Give it a few weeks
Has the doctor suggested surgery for your goiter? That maybe what is causing your choking feeling because it pressing on your esophagus.See if you can get an ultrasound to check the location.
Again welcome and let us know how you are doing.

My doctor insisted that I not take generic brands because they are all manufactured differently. I felt much better when I switched to brand name. All your symptoms are part of hypo heck! Hang in there !  Your TSh is extremely high and it will be a process to bring it down. I always felt great after upping my dose for about 2weeks then I felt like I was sliding down again until another increase. Labs are generally checked every 4-6 wks depending on your dr. With your tsh I would hope the dr. would test at 4 wks next time instead of 6.

It took 6 months to finally get my TSH in normal range after thyroidectomy. Just keep on top of all your lab work and go as soon as the doc wants you there. I can't say how long it will take everyone is different.

The goiter represents the swelling of your thyroid, like venora said it's putting pressure on your throat.

Hang in there and welcome aboard!
