Newbie~ Hypothyroid

by finetilthree, Apr 02, 2008 12:02PM
Hello, new to this thyroid board, regular on the heart rhythm community.  Had a couple of questions which I have not been able to get answered on the heart forum.  Does anyone know if being hypothyroid can cause heart palpitations and/or atrial fibrillation?  I am aware that being hyperthyroid can, but I am only curious about hypothyroid.  Had a high TSH about one month ago...value was 6.1.  I will be going for follow up blood work tomorrow or the next day to do the full thyroid panel, but in the meantime, I would appreciate any responses.  Thanks!

I have high TSH - first test 11.54 and second test 65.4 (all done in the past three months) so am now on 75mcgs of thyroxine, which may have to increase to 100mcgs if it is still too high after my next blood test in a couple of weeks.   The reason I initially went to the doctor was because of heart palpitations and feeling generally unwell and he ordered some blood tests, which showed up the TSH level.  Doctor didn't seem to think that heart palpitations and being hypothyroid were related, but I have seen lots of posts on forums where people say that heart fluttering/palpitations is definitely a symptom.

Dear Melbury,
Thank you very much for your response.  Have your heart palps improved now that you are on medication?  My problems started after child birth so I will not be very surprised if it does turn out to be thyroid related! Thanks again for your response to me.

They haven't stopped, but do not seem quite as bad as they used to be.  Some people say it takes ages to get to the dose of thyroxine that is just right for you and, when that happens, all of the symptoms should hopefully disappear.  I am still waiting to get there.

Hi! I have also been going through the same things. I have been on the heart forum as well and seen your postings there.
I have been hypothyroid for a long time and always had heart palpitations and missed  beats but changed my medicine dosage about four months ago and everything really went crazy with my heart. I did not think that the two were related but I am beginning to feel like they are. The doctors do not think they are related either, but I am feeling some better with my heart since changing my medicine dose again.
So I really can't answer your question but wonder the same thing. If I can just get my thyroid in check maybe my heart would follow:)
