Nodule Biopsy Report

Hi,

I have 3 nodules on my right thyroid that are 1.8cm, 1.4cm and 0.7cm. I found them in early September after my TSH bloods came back high (0.22). I had a RAI uptake scan which suggested the nodules were cold so I have had a biopsy on one of the nodules only. The surgeon said that the report is benign but that we will need to do a repeat biopsy in 6 months because the biopsy is not 100% accurate. The results conclusion says 'COLLOID RICH FOLLICULAR LESION WITH A BENIGN PATTERN'. It mentions there is abundant thin colloid, multiple follicular epithelial fragments, and scattered in the background are large numbers of bare nuclei of follicular type. I have no idea what any of that means!

Is this the usual path for this type of biopsy result I know before I got the report I was reading on these and other forums and they said that there are 4 types of nodules: benign, malignant, inconclusive and follicular (and that with follicular you can only be sure it is not malignant once it has been removed). Should I be pushing to have the other nodule over 1cm tested?

Thanks in advance for any help... I have been trying to post on the doctors forum for months but it doesn't matter what time of day I try and post it's always full!

Kristy.

Sounds like good results but do keep on top of it!  You can request the other one be FNA'd when you have the repeat FNA done in 6 mos.  I go for serial ultrasounds ev. 6 mos as I have a small 3mm on the left thyroid.  I had 2 other benign follicular atypical removed in Jan which were not cancer but they found two very small cancer areas elsewhere in the gland upon final biopsy (papillary) so they watch the intact side very closely but mine resembles the benign follicular lesions they removed.

Also, you want to keep on top of it for size of growth .... you don't want it interupting anything else close to the thyroid or the hormone levels, etc.

Keep us posted~

Sounds like it's a good result.
Colloid is generally a plus for benign from what I have read.
The pattern is also a key- micro vs macro- look that up there's alot online explaining that aspect.
Malignant usually has nuclei from what I understand- so bare would be good right?
Here's an article about follicular nodules:

If you're worried, insist on further follow up- after all it's YOUR body and health.

Oh I forgot to mention that the original ultrasound said that the nodules had well defined margins and were hypo to iso echoic but that the ultrasound they did when they did the biopsy said that the margins are ill defined and that it is iso echoic.
Thanks...
