Not sure what is happening

Hello there,

I am not sure what is happening with me, but for the past two weeks I have been losing weight for no known reason. Could having a total hysterectomy last Feb. 08 and not being on any type of hormone replacement cause one to have thyroid problems? First off it started I was having the jitters - haven't had this strange feeling in YEARS. That is just one of the symptoms and then the weight loss. I am a bit concerned about the weight loss though - NOT that I don't need to lose weight because I do, but not lose it when I don't know why I'm losing it.

How fast did you lose the weight? I get worried when it's 3 pounds in just a few days, especially when all I've been doing is eating. I would normally gain weight for eating like I have been, but not now. I really need to give my endo a call. Hopefully he will listen and not shrug me off.

The palpitations and the feeling of coming out of your skin sound like me a couple years ago. I never weighed much to begin with but I lost weight too. I was down to 109 lbs. back in July--and that was TWO YEARS into being "treated" for Graves' disease. If you have that and you don't have a "real" endocrinologist, it will get worse. Only in the past two weeks have I had some relief since June of '06--but I still have some symptoms. They just aren't as strong or as often. I haven't rushed to the ER in three weeks!

I totally forgot to mention this other symptom! Maybe this is important, but I have had an increase in appetite. It seems I am always hungry and it seems lately maybe an hour or two after eating I am hungry again.

Thank you both of you for answering my questions.

I am thinking maybe I could have become hyperthyroid (fingers crossed - NOT that I want that condition, just that I want an answer about the sudden weight loss).

I have a lot of body aches, breaking out with acne (like a teen), and anxious and jittery. Sometimes I feel like I am jumping out of my skin! But this jittery feeling could also be because I have been so worried about the weight loss. I have a lot of heart palpitations too.

utahmomma, I was already at my primary doctors last week. I told him about the weight loss and all he was comparing it to was my weight the month before. He was not listening to me at all. I kept saying "You're not listening to me and you don't understand" I told him the 2 - 3 pounds I lost was just in a few days - I NEVER lose weight like this, not even when I am dieting. Yesterday I had a BIG meal. I even took seconds and I still dropped a pound. I don't understand this.

Maybe you need your thyroid tested.  Could it be possible that you have become hyperthroid?  Any other symptoms?

It wouldn't cause thyroid problems but it could make already existing problems worse.  Have you had your thyroid levels run?  If so, can you post the results here?

If your results are within the normal range your doctor needs to run some tests on you ASAP.  Rapid weight loss (while nice for a while) can be a worrisome sign and they need to figure out why.
