OT: bad day and update on my mother

Hey all.  Kind of a bad day so I thought I'd turn to my chicken neck friends.

Talked to my mom today  Her doctor finally decided that she needs an ultrasound on her thyroid (duh!).  For those who don't remember, I have papillary carcinoma as do three of my sisters.  The other sister had "precancerous" lesions in her thyroid as did my then 16-year old daughter.  Needless to say my mother is at HUGE risk for thyroid cancer and her *huge* goiter is concern enough.  She's been "treating" it with herbs for years but now it's getting difficult for her to breath and her lymph nodes are swollen and hard.  She also needs abdominal and pelvic ultrasounds for a large "mass" in her abdomen.

She said it's about time she moved out of her "state of denial".  Yeah, I'd say so too.

To top if off I had to put down my sweet, loyal companion today.  My 12 year old dachshund suddenly developed sever diabetes a few months ago. In the past 5 week he has been in the ICU 6 times.  Despite 2x daily doses of insulin, a well controlled diet, and intensive work by the vet and his hospital staff, Buster wasn't doing to well this morning.  He kept falling down and refused food (*NOT* common for dachshunds).  I took him to the hospital and just after they checked his glucose (unreadable high) he went into cardiac arrest.  He had two IVs and was on the ventilator when the vet ran out and asked me to come into the OR.  I opted to end his suffering.  I've spent the entire day in tears.   Okay, to keep this on topic - he also was on 2x daily thyroid meds too.

Anyway, Monday is my mother's scheduled ultrasounds.  I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for listening.

I am so sorry about your Buster and your Mom's thyroid issues worsening. With all that you are facing you don't need that too, I am truly so so sorry. Our pets can be such a source of comfort when things are rough, I know I am concerned about my 12 year old Trixie whose back legs are going out from under her and once I am back in business will be off to the Vet with what I am afraid may be a decision. My friend Linda who is battling breast cancer just lost her Leo after 12 years, they are such a part of the family and again such a source of comfort, my heart is with you. Sorry I have not been in the forum much, my daughter works on the computer all day and since I went back to work, I come home and go to sleep on the 3 days I actually made it to work this past week.
Keep us posted and I will try and get on when I can.
Much Love

Thank you so much.  Your friendship and well wishes means so much to me.

Yes, I'm hoping that we can figure out, and treat, whatever is going on with my mother.  I just wish she would have taken charge of it years ago but better late than never.

MJ13:  no boys in the family until my son (who is now 16) was born.  I had both him and his sister's thyroids scanned about four years ago which is how we found out my daughter had multiple, suspicious, large nodules - one pressing on her jugular.  Luckily we got her thyroid out while it was still "precancerous".  My son's thyroid was 100% nodule free.  We'll get another ultrasound next year.  I've talked to his endo (for diabetes) and he agrees we should check it every five years or so.  The only other boy in the family (other than my dad whose thyroid is fine) is my 5 year old nephew.  He gets his first ultrasound next year.

As for the well wishes about Buster - thank you so much.  The house is so much emptier without him.  I kind of miss taking my thyroid meds then giving him his.  :-)  My two females are moping around looking for him and my son has been in tears - that dog was his constant companion since he was a preschooler.  A few of you mentioned the companionship of a good dog during thyroid problems.  Buster laid by my side in my bed during both of my surgery recoveries.  He was so cute when I was on my LID diet too- he'd look at what I was eating, kind of whine a bit, and push his dog bowl over to me.

I'm just glad he isn't hurting anymore.  I took all of his insulin, special ($$$) diet food, syringes, and his meds to the humane society today so the vet there can take care of other special need dogs.

Thank you all for being the wonderful people you are!  Thyroid patients are the best!!
Lots of love,

Utah

I'm so sorry to hear about your Buster.  I truly understand your pain --  I lost my little guy two weeks ago --

I've only posted on here once or twice before (directed at KoalaEm's surgery/recovery.)

I had a lobectomy on 10/17 and found out two days later that it was papillary cancer w/ follicular variants, so the rest of my thyroid was taken out on 10/24 --

Many of you know the 'routine'... Get your energy back from surgery just in time to stop Cytomel, go into hypo-H-E-double-hockey-sticks... and do RAI.

Two weeks ago tomorrow -- which happened to be the Saturday before my RAI -- my 6 year old schnauzer became VERY ill.  It turned out that he had a sudden onset of something quite rare -- a gallbladder mucocele, which means his gallbladder turned to gel. There were also questionable spots on his liver and at that point, peritonitis setting in...  Emergency surgery was a possibility but his future was 'iffy' with so many things going on inside, and I couldn't ask him to suffer for me...  I held him as he crossed from pain into peace --

It happened so quickly, and I'm still in shock --  My house (and my bed) are so empty --
And at a time when I so need his companionship --
What a couple of months it has been!

I'm hoping for a better and brighter 2008 for us all!

Good luck w/ everything with your Mom.  I'll be thinking about you --

PLS keep us posted on your mother and she has the BEST support of all : YOU!!!!  So so so sorry to hear of your loss of your "best friend pooch" .. it is really tough .. they are so much a part of us and so understanding and most of all they don't pass judgement and have unconditional love.

Really am glad your mom is taking care of herself .. it is sometimes tough to get past the Capital "D" in denial but baby steps first make it a tiny bit easier w/ea med appt.

Sorry to hear about Buster.  I have a poodle, named Percy, who has been such a companion to me, especially after my divorce and deaths of 3 family members in the last 3 years.   I can't imagine my life without him.  Just remember Buster isn't in pain any more and is probably chewing on a doggy bone up in doggy heaven looking down at you right now.

On the other hand, I'm doing the happy dance that your mom FINALLY say the light.  Now hopefully you guys can get some answers quickly as to what is going on with her thyroid.  I, too, have a very stubborn family member who has had a goiter removed about 20 yrs ago with no follow up care whatsoever.  Even with 2 sisters now having thyca.  We're gonna gang up on her and do a thyroid intervention.  If I have to drag her to a doctor myself

Question...any guys in your family with thyroid problems?  Do they get their thyroid checked?

Oh my gosh.....your post really hit home for me.  I have a 15 year old chocolate lab that's going downhill each day.  I've been cleaning up after her every day for at least a year, as she's lost control of her bowels and her bladder.  She's nothing but skin and bones, although she eats really good.  She spends most of her days laying on her bed, and is just not getting around well.  Her hips are bad and she falls a lot.  I've talked to my boys, and we've decided to put her down after Christmas.  I know, it's pure selfishness on our part that we want her around for one more.  I've obviously spend a great deal of time thinking about this, and now that it's here, I just feel awful.  Luckily, I have a black lab who's 4 and a golden retriever that's 7 months old, who will somewhat fill the void.  It won't take the pain away though.  She's been a great dog.

Anyway, I'm so sorry that you had to go through this especially at this time of the year.  It's never easy.  But like the other poster said, you did the right thing.

I hope all goes well with your mom too.  Wow, talk about a family history - you sure have it there!  I'm surprised, given the situation, that her doctor waited this long to do an ultrasound.  Please DO keep us posted as to how she turns out.

Sending big e-hugs your way!!

Lori

Am so sorry for all you are going through.  Lost my little doggie recently and just broke my heart.  So I completely understand about Buster.  You did the right thing by him, hard to decision to make, but he is so much better off.

Am glad your mom is finally getting something done.  Will praying for good news and waiting to find out.

God be with you.

My heart sank when I read your note, I feel for you.  Losing loved ones is so hard.  Memories keep them going in our lives, as the song goes.  My pets are my children (to many children, (15) - 13 cats, 2 dogs) but I love them all), we do what we can for them as long as we can.  We have a 21 year old cat that we are keeping alive with fluids everyday, amongst other medications.  I just wish you well and with your Mother also.  Sorry all this has to happen around the holidays.  Josi

I haven't followed your history but I sincerely wish your mom and those who love her the best!

I'm sorry, also, for the loss of your "little" best friend. I know how "quiet" one's world can seem, when they lose a long loved pet. You did the right thing.

Chin up,
~Kate
