POLL: Do YOU wait half an hour OR an hour before food after your thyroxine?

Hi!
Just wondering what the majority do as some of the literature varies between 0.5hr and 1hr.

The prescribing info states that fasting increases absorbtion.

When I was having trouble getting my dose just right I made a conscious effort to leave at least an hour before eating after taking my thyroxine.  In previous months I'd waited mostly half an hour, occasionally an hour.

Anyway I believe it made a difference - being consistent is probably the key whatever you do.  I wonder if anyone else has experienced something similar OR different?

Love to hear other people's stories...
Hoping you are all well!!!!

The important thing is to be consistent.  If you take it on an empty stomach, which is preferable, then do it that way everyday. If you take it with food, then do that everyday.

Well I guess I'm the "black sheep" in the group. I've been on Synthroid since 1980 after a T.T. I know ir's supposed to be taken at the same time every day and on an empty stomach, but I've never done it.

I don't have a regular sleep pattern....Sometimes I sleep all day....sometimes I sleep all night. I take my Synthroid and other "morning meds" whatever time I get up and I am usually eating when I take it. I take my "bedtime meds" whatever time I go to bed.

I don't have kids, but I tell my mom, sister, etc...To do as I say and not as I do and take their meds just the way the instructions tell them to lol.

I wait about an hour but I have coffee in the morning w milk right after I take my pill. I have been told that if I do that consistantly the level of meds is consistant in absorbtion. Anyone have any comments to that. I don't eat till later.

Most days I wait an hour to consume anything but water...seems I can notice that it doesnt absorb very well if I only wait 1/2 hr to drink coffee

Hi, Jen--

I can echo what Cheryl said about guidelines. I have seen (from a credible source) a definition of "empty stomach" as two hours after eating or other meds, and then waiting half an hour before eating, but I have been told that waiting an hour is optimal.  After taking a dose of Levothroid, I try to hold out for an hour before eating.  Unfortunately, my body sometimes demands food in a weak-and-shaky way that is not at all endearing!  I always can hang on for half an hour, and although I am constantly on the lookout for any way in which I can improve the way I feel, I have not seen any difference at all between waiting .5 and 1 hour.

Yours,
Jenny

My endo says I don't have to wait, but typically I end up waiting just under an hour.  I take it when I get up and then I have diet pepsi on the way to work.

I take mine first thing in the a.m. at like 5:00 and then I don't eat breakfast till' about 8:00 a.m. During that time I drink a TON of water........  I believe it helps the absorption! Just my 2 cents worth.

I've always done at least an hour, sometimes more if I am busy in the morning.
