PTU allergy?

by mjmj57inKy, Dec 22, 2007 07:58AM
I was diagnosed with Grave's Disease in early November. I was put on methimazole (sp?) I had horrilble itching of my hands and feet so I was switched to PTU.  I have begun itching on my hands and feet again, but not as intense as the other med.  It may not be as intense, but it is still bothering me. I realize itching is a side effect, but just on the hands and feet? is this an allergic reaction? Does the itching get better the longer you are on the the PTU?  If I cannot tolerate this med then I will have to go the RAI route.  Anyone have similare reactionsor answers/suggestions for me?  Thanks. MJ

This is going to be an ongoing issue because it is a side effect. The only thing you can truly do to end the itching is to switch meds again or as you said do the RAI. I had PTU and my problem was that I itched & my heart raced. Unfortunately, these are th options. I work in the medicine field, & have been dealing with a thyroid condition for better than 10 years. It's soooooo frustrating & medicine doesn't always make sense. I wish you nothing but the best in your battle. Happy Holidays!
