Palpitations and Hashi's

I have been on meds for hypothyroidism for about 2 years, have felt good at this dosage (which I increased to about a year ago) until about a month ago when I started having intermittent palpitations.  I thought it was in my head for awhile (I'm 26, in good shape, etc.) but they have been getting worse and more frequent.  Just recently my resting heart rate was over 100 beats/min almost all day, and also having arrythmias multiple times a day, easily winded, chest pains, etc.  I went in and blood tests showed my TSH at low normal, free T3 normal and free T4 just barely too high (1.77, reference range goes up to 1.70).   Also, my blood pressure, which is normally about 90/60 was 120/90.  My dr. (here in Thailand) thinks I've gone a bit hyper and that's what's causing these symptoms.  He decreased my dosage a little and will have me check back in a few weeks.

Could these numbers really be causing these extreme heart symptoms?  Is this a typical recommendation or would dr.s in the states order more tests?  I've never had heart issues before so this is new to me, and sometimes dr.s here don't really go by the book.  Thanks!

Hi Sara...

I am 26 and been have had Hashimoto's for 13 years.  About 8 years ago I went through what you are going through.  They simply attributed it to a side effect of the levoxyl.  I had MRIs, CT scans, blood work, they put me on a portable EKG machine for 1 week, etc.  They basically did a work up on me.  The EKG DID show the palpatations (which made me feel less "crazy").  But, like I said, they attributed the palpatations to the levoxyl.  I suppose you could ask for a portable EKG machine to be hooked up so that it can monitor your heart.  That definitely would not be a bad thing... since there could be something else going on.  Just ask your doctor over there.  Good luck!

If possible, have your adrenal glands tested.  Many symptoms of hyper and hypo are the same and similar to adrenal fatigue.  It does sound like your dr. is using his head and treating you by the symptoms and not just the lab tests.  This is what a good dr. should do.  I would trust his judgment and wait til your next lab test.  You might begin to feel better in the meantime.   Good luck.

but i also get palpitations from chocolate and coffee and coke (although they dont give me the fast pulse or high blood pressure).
