Papillary cancer that has reached the chest

Is there anybody out there who has had thyroid cancer (papillary) which has reached the chest? Would like to hear some positive stories of recovery from the operation. My partner has just had a major operation to remove cancer including thyroidectomy, lymph nodes and chestarea. It was only a few days ago but he has a lot of chest pain and finds it hard to breath comfortably. How long should it take before he should feel a bit better.

I don't know of anyone on this forum with this particular problem/surgery.  I would imagine, with that extensive surgery, recuperation will take some time, including being able to breath comfortably.
