Parathyroid - high calcium - hair is falling out

If hair loss is not a symptom of overactive parathyroid, and my thyroid is fine and calcium is high.
what else should be looked at about the hair loss?
What can be tried to slow/stop the loss?

Calcium levels jumped up in January and in March hair started shedding - my hats don't fit. braids are pencil thin
i would really like something to try

I have hyperthyroid and i've had some symptoms of hypothyriod its so strange.     The hair loss, weight gain, brain fog.    My hair dosen't fall out as much now,but i'm on meds, but its thin.   Not sure that helped because it stopped falling out before i started taking my meds.

Blessings!

You have more signs of LOW thyroid that is HYPO.  Not Hyper.

Loss of hair and fatigue are probably two of the most common symptoms of Hypo.  Cold intolerance or always feeling cold/low body temp are also common.

You ADD symptom is also consistent with low Thyroid where people often complain of "brain fog", forgetfulness etc.

you NEED to get your Thyroid checked and DEMAND the FREE T3 and FREE T4 tests.  When you get them please come back and post your results with the reference ranges.

Even if you fall within the "normal" reference ranges does not mean that you are not Hypo.  however Many Dr's will NOT treat you in that situation and you will remain feeling like crap.

Finding a "good" Thyroid Dr is a very difficult task!

Everything that I have read has stated hair loss as a symptom of hyperparathyroidism.  I too have had the high calcium.  Blood tests consistently show high calcium and high PTH.  24 hour urine shows high calcium.  I had a sestimibi test last week and will get the results on Friday.  I am not feeling well, not able to give specifics, but I just don't feel right.  I guess maybe now that I know the symptoms, I notice them more.  My most common is feeling like I am half asleep.  It got so bad that I was tested for ADD! I wish you the best....had that parathyroid checked.

I have long had hair falling. There may exist different kinds of hair falling: falling with their roots or breaking off pieces of hairs. Because of the longevity of each hair may be several years, breaking off pieces of them can occur for a long time. I think that falling off of the hairs totally with their roots takes a shorter period, just when there is a special cause, eg. wrong dose of thyroid medication.

When I started Thyroxine, many of my hairs fell out after about eight moths. When I changed to Armour, my hair reacted similarly, and again after the change to Thyroid, similar hair loss took place.

Now I have been at the same daily dose of Thyroid for a longer time, but hair falling has lasted long. I suppose that this is breaking off pieces of earlier grown hairs (possibly grown during a wrong thyroid medication dose). I have not, however, examined the fallen hairs whether they have roots.

I also have hypercalcemia. I have read that hair falling can also be a symptom of hyperparathyroidism.

How do you know your "thyroid is fine"?

DO you have lab tests that you can post?

Just because your TSH may fall within a "normal range" does not necessarily mean that your Free T3 and Free T4 are anywhere close to where they ought to be.  It is not uncommon for people to have low (hypo) thyroid and have all the symptoms yet still have all their labs test to fall within normal ranges.  However they are at the low ends of the ranges and the Dr's are perfectly happy to tell you that you are fine and it is all in your head and they will keep you feeling like crap!

Calcium can I know affect the absorption of Thyroid medications.  But if you are not on any medications this may be a non issue.

With the hair loss, do you lose hair on the outer edges of your eyebrows?  This is a classic sign of low thyroid but isn't necessary.  But if so is nearly 100% indicative of hypothyroid.

I would check my adrenals. An easy start to support your adrenals is to take a good B-Complex morning and early afternoon, and a good form of Vitamin C, for starters.
Also a good thought to remember is the fact that all people experience their own personalized set of symptoms with each disorder. There are many of us that are the victims of "abnormal" symptoms for certain disorders, so you just never know! :)
