I think you have 4 parathyroid glands in your neck and they produce calcium. I had 3 of them removed along with 32 lymph nodes last November and my Calcium levels has been fine. I try to eat a little more calcium enriched food but my Doctors say everything is fine. I should probably start calcium pills but I just can't stand the thought of having to take yet another pill every single day for the rest of my life. I'm working on it.
you do have 4 parathyroid glands and my surgeon told me that you only need 1/4 of ONE gland to have totally normal function for your whole body... so removing one gland would not likely result in any major disruption to your calcium distribution. As for the surgery itself, I don't know, but I can't imagine it's any worse that a TT and that was a pretty easy surgery for me. I had my TT on Friday and was back at work on Tuesday.
