Peripheral neuropathy after RAI

I had (undiagnosed) hyperthyroidism for many years from a multinodule toxic goiter.  I had RAI ablation over two months ago.  Just recently my lab results have begun to change.  I also sleep longer and have gained weight and am sometimes cold instead of being hot all of the time.  There are other subtle changes that I expected after RAI.  What I didn't expect was the considerable numbness and occasional pain in my foot pads.  It's driving me crazy.  I just went through nerve testing with a neurologist and he ruled out some conditions and confirmed peripheral neuropathy.

My question is whether this neuropathy will diminish as my thyroid levels approach "normal".  Or is this the new normal?  Has anyone else experienced this after RAI?  Is this a side effect of RAI?  Will this diminish as my thyroid becomes more normal?

I realize this is a not a question, but a stream if them!  I will appreciate any insight into this.  Thank you!

I had RAI about 35 years ago. Started to develop PN about 20 years ago. I have been able to keep it under control with supplements, good eating and weekly exercise routines. It has not gone past my toes or the ball of my feet and I have no real pain associated with in now.

There is a great forum at http://neurotalk.************.com/forum20.html  for support of PN and they have a lot of information on supplements etc..

Pernicious anemia/vitamin B12 deficiency can cause peripheral neuropathy and should always be ruled out.  This can be done with a simple blood test.  I had untreated pernicious anemia for many years, and have permanent nerve damage because it.  My thyroid levels don't change it.

While I can't directly answer your question, as I have hypothyroidism and have not had RAI ablation but I do also experience peripheral neuropathies related to my thyroid.  When I have hypo symptoms, that is definitely one of them.  When the meds were working and my levels were normal, it would go away.  So hopefully as you begin to regulate and normalize your levels, yours will also go away.  Good luck!
