Please Help :( Askanazy / Hurthle cell changes

Hi there,

I am totally new to this and would really really appreciate your help.

I recently had a FNA of a 1cm nodule which said re the smears ''bland follicle cells some of which show Askanazy cell changes'' - from research I see Askanaky is also known as Hurthle.  Can anyone tell me if the askanazy/hurthle cell changes are always indivative of thyroid disease? or are they present where everything is normal?  The report diagnosis of benign follicular pattern so I am not worried about cancer but have alse read these cells are considered pre cancerous and was wondering if this is correct?

There was a 6mm nodule they did not biopsy.

9 years ago (age 21)  the right side of my thyroid was removed due to a large nodule they thought was cancerous.

The endocrinologist that I have this time has told me there is nothing wrong with my thyroid at all as all blood work is normal, so really hope someone can help me.

Thanks for your help :)

Hi there. Askanzay was the original 'finder' of those cells..Hurthle got more recognition for his work though and so they were named after him.
Many endocrinologists won't take the risk of them turning into full blown cancer. It can be that they just sit there for many years (the cells not the endocrinologists...LOL!) So often the doctors will just wait and see.
Personally, since you mention there is follicular cells with hurthle cell change, I would have it removed. I had the same issue. Mine was much larger and caused me a huge goitre.  My levels were always 'normal' but I felt lousy. I was hypo and no one took any notice.
So really it is up to you. They can remain inactive for a long time. It may be like in my case the goitre led to the diagnosis of HUrthle cells and not the Hurthle cells causing any problems.
Cheers
