Pls Advice.Hyperthyroid and Pregnant

by rnairr, Jan 22, 2008 02:33PM
I am posting this question for my wife who is 23 weeks pregnant.  She had a blood test today and doctor suspects she has hyperthyroidism.  Her TSH level is 0.14, t3 is 189 ng/dl, T4-9.74 ug/dl.  We do not have a history of thyroid and she had delivered our first baby 5 yrs back without any problem.

We are really worried about our baby.  Lot of articles in internet mentions the baby brain development might be affected due to maternal thyroid issues.  Is this true ?    We are worried that we couldn't detect this the whole 23 weeks. Is it too late to start medication ?

Look at page 5 of the following link:

Hope this is of some help as I have no personal experience with this.

I am hyperthyroid as well & have never been pregnant, but would like to be in the near future, so I have been studying alot about this topic. From what I have read, it is pretty safe to be on anti-thyroid meds (PTU being the preferred drug) during pregnancy. Of course, there are risks with the meds, but it seems to be better to try controlling the thyroid with the meds, as opposed to not taking any meds at all, b/c if left untreated, there can be many complications for both mother & baby. If her OB/GYN is not very knowledgable about hyperthyroidism, try to find a reproductive endocrinologist in your area that can help you decide on the best treatment for mother & baby. Best of luck to you.

I was pregnant on PTU. My baby is one yo and everything is fine. I'm pregnant again and not worried.
